Gas in Gerlach - Don't rely on Bruno's Shell to be open anytime....There are no normal hours in Gerlach. However, Bruno also owns most of Gerlach and if there's a problem, he or Chuck Duffy can normally be located at Bruno's Cafe/Bar, just north of the station about 1000'. Chuck can get you gas...Additionally there are gas pumps in Empire, just south of Gerlach about 2 miles. They're controlled by the operators at the grocery store in the adjacent building. They're not open 24 hours either. If all else fails and they're both closed, the next nearest 24 hour station is due south, appx 60 miles, in Fernley. There are two 24 hour truck stops adjacent to I/80, east of Nixon.

West of Fernley, there are also a couple 24 hour stations on I/80, east of Reno by 30 miles or so....Check Mapquest for actual mileage.

Watch for range cattle from Gerlach to Nixon. Indian land and no fences...cows everywhere! Additionally, you'll travel thru a couple real small Indian towns on the same highway. The speed limit is 25MPH and they love to write tickets to speeders! Be careful!

PS... Bruno's serves a decent breakfast. Try his home grown pork chops. Lunch and dinner he serves great Raviolli's. Reno people have been known to drive to Brunos just for the Raviolli's. Bruno also has a "simple" motel...clean but no frills.

I'd like to get some experienced locals opinions on gas stops coming west on Hwy 50 across Nevada... say starting in Hinkley, Utah... that seems to be the path I'll be taking (at least on the way out there), and I'd like to plan my stops so I don't run out of gas in the middle of nowhere...

One more road that has me curious is Oregon Hwy. 206 running s. out of Burns thru Frenchglen, w. of Steens Mtn., down to Denio Jct, Hwy 292 Nevada. Is this good pavement (anybody)..., too remote for gas on stock tank??? (275 mi. range)  Is there gas at Denio Jct.???
It has been about 15 years since I was on that road but it was a very good two lane through some scenic and very remote country. There was gas at Denio and a couple of other places but you shouldn't have any trouble making it from Winnemucca to Burns on a single tank. The B&B at French Glen is a very popular tourist spot but you need reservations well in advance.
Now this is hittin' close to home. I was through Frenchglen on my work bike (on 9/12/01 actually) and can vouch for the pavement south of there all the way to Denio. There are no cars either, which is quite nice. I've fueled up in Denio and had breakfast before turning around and heading back to Burns. I can't say for certain, but the gas station in Denio looked like a 24/7 back then.

Be careful, though, it's all open range through there.

Check out the photo, it was taken about 30 miles south of Frenchglen on 9/12/01. I have another one I need to track down that was taken further down the road. I'm standing on my seat surrounded by cattle.

The best road in the area is Grant County Road 20 which is 38 miles long and follows the John Day Middle Fork River between Austin Junction (Highway 7) and Ritter (Highway 395).  It was fully paved 4-5 years ago.
+1 Nice ridin' on this road.

Hwy 50, Eastern Nevada - Gas

Ely, Austin and Eureka have stations, however Ely is the only one that may have 24 hour service. My last trip thru Austin and Eureka, closing time is "whenever they want." If you fill-up in Ely, you'll make it to Fallon with no problem. Fallon has several 24 hour stations, then there are numerous stations from there to Reno.

hey..., thanks for updates, insights and keeping this alive! (FJR_pig and Blown36)

I'm in need of some of that wide open (stay alert) grand expanse away from it all!

Does the Pony Express still run through there??? :cownoy: uhhhhh..., nevermind

Traveling North (from Bakersfield) on 99 to 41 to 49 to 4 (Ebbets Pass) to 395, starting around 5AM on Thursday 27th.

Anyone interested in traveling that route that is either on the way or coming from farther South, PM me.
