Anybody have a clue why only three GPS "points" are listed on my map? I tried to send 10-12 "OK" messages with GPS coordinates. My procedure was to turn on the SPOT, wait 10-15 seconds, then press "OK" and wait for both LED's to flash together. Then wait a bit and shut everything down. Are other folks having difficulties? Am I doing something wrong? Or is just "hit ot miss" depending on weather, trees, where you are, etc.?
I would say your issue is that you are turning the spot off (why?) The batteries in these things will last the average rider about a season or more. If you're turning it off you're really only allowing it to get confused, it takes it a bit fro it to know where it is on initiation (which is what turing it on does), and it will do this quicker if moving and not stationary. Also, every time you hit "OK" to send a transmission, it sends it three times (i believe 10 minutes apart?) in an attempt to help make sure the transmission identifying the spot of when you pushed the button is rec'd. If you are turning it off, it may not even have the chance to send the first one, certainly not the following ones!
Suggestion: Leave the thing ON!! give it a clear view to the sky, and whenever the mood strikes you, hit "OK". I think you'll find you have much better results. Good luck!

EDIT: just checked out the map .....your in my battle born state of Nevada!! what you up to? :)

EDIT #2:

then press "OK" and wait for both LED's to flash together. Then wait a bit and shut everything down
OK, so when you do that you are actually putting the device in tracking mode (are you signed up for tracking mode, and have you done the fireEagle thing?) Even if not shutting it down would cancel it. And, by doing what you're doing you can't send OK messages. You either set the device to track, or leave it ready for OK messages. To go from one to the other you have to make a conscientious effort. I'm probably making this sound more complicated than it really is ...feel free to email me with your phone and I can call you....john
Phone?

I am signed up for tracking and fireeagle (because it was in your instructions), but I don't like the dozens of tracking icons on the maps. For SPOTcasting mode you press OK for 5 seconds (I'm re-reading the manual). It sends a position every 10 minutes. If you are stuck at a construction stop or a rest break.. you see the problem? I need to find out if you can go back into a map and delete some of the confusing points of contact.

If you hit the OK button briefly you send one point and a "OK" massage is sent to your pre-assigned contact emails and telephones. OK, I just pulled out the instruction manual and it says to leave it on 20 minutes after pressing OK in "'CHECK IN Mode' to allow for the three attempts to be sent (as you mentioned John). Duplicates are discarded by the system.

That 'splains my problem, I wasn't leaving it on long enough to send the three messages -- as you pointed out. I guess I'll just take your advice and leave the sucker on. The manual goes on to say, "You cannot cancel a SPOTcheck message, but you can stop any unsent SPOTcheck messages by turning off the messenger at any time...." I must have read that at 3am the other night and short-circuited the message in my head. Got it straight now. I was attempting today NOT to have multiple identical points on my map, and fubared the thing. A little learning curve, that's all.

Why your neck of the woods? Last year I stopped in Fallon and had a pulled pork BBQ sandwich to die for.... and Big Ed (the owner who's Gixxer was parked outside) and I talked for 1/2 hour (he told me about 6 mile canyon -- CURVY!) and generally I had the best bar-b-que I have ever had (and I've had Texas, Louisiana, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana bar-b-que.). In my humble opinion he makes the BEST. And I was not disappointed tonight at dinner... yum. I had a couple days and it was only 1100 miles out of my way to Moscow, so what the hell. I thought of you as I rode through the start of some thunderstorms tonight in Reno... must have been some of those inner conversations you've been having with yourself -- :dribble: ;)

Thanks for all the mentoring John. Don't work too hard. Maybe next year we can have a good sandwich and ride to WFO9 together, if your work doesn't get in the way? :assassin:

really no harm in identical location transmissions ......they typically are not even seen on the map because they're right on top of each other. I leave mine on for days at at time, even during long stops (It does shut off after 24hours, so I turn it off/on to reset it every day).

Really you're going to miss enough because of trees, mountains of flukes of nature -that having a few duplicates makes you feel good :)

The owner of that rib place does catering and is a handgun enthusiast. I 'kinda' know him from that. You should have let me know ...I would have joined you for a swine feast tonight.

have fun with your spot, it will start to make sense at some magical moment in your near future.

As you can see on the map, after I picked up my pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, I impulsively thought I'd swing my route from North and a little east to east and a little north today. The plan was to meet up with BeemerDon and OM for some stories and riding. Of course, Don had no idea, and when he changed his plans, he had no reason to let me know. So I ended up slabbing to make time with little to show for it. And my GPS tried to send me down two Count 'em TWO off and on ramps that were closed for road work. I got frustrated and ended up going up a small gravel slope, past a blockade on a west bound on ramp closed for some reason. Sssshhhh don't tell anybody. I got the idea from a guy in a charger who must have been frustrated as well.

You can see on the map I went 25 miles too far before backtracking and heading north into Idaho. Tomorrow I'll continue swinging north to Moscow. I'll be ending WFO early and will track my visit into Montana to see my brother. Haven't decided how to get back to Oregon yet. I tend to wing these things as you may notice... ;)

We pulled into the garage about an hour ago. We teamed up with LD FJR (Roger) and left the WFO parking lot right about 6am, along with many other riders, and made our way west. Ran up to Colfax, then down 26 and 127 to 12, then through Iggy and Warchild's Tri-Cities area, and out to Prosser for breakfast at The Barn. Then down through Mabton and Bickleton for some sweet twisties, through Goldendale and on to more fine twisties on the way to Klickitat where we stopped for a chocolate shake before the final push down Hwy 14 for home. Big STM map of our whole weekend HERE.
