We miss you TWN. ;)
Just an FYI - I've know many people both car truck bike etc, racer types, mechanics, plain ole people, and I know of none that have lost an engine due to type of oil or oil filter type.

To show how robust some engines are:

As a kid I remember a lady down the street, her car rolled down her steep driveway, across the street and hit the curb sheering off the oil filter. With all the oil now in the gutter she drove it, three miles to the dealer, where they pronounced her engine was severely damaged. Still ran though. Just sayin'

Is that some kind of an aftermarket filter there, BJ?

The only one I have personally seen was an old Frantz toilet paper filter that came apart and plugged some cam bearing passages.

Oh come-on, Ray... now your just talking out yer ***.

:p
You can learn a lot listening to some of the *** holes around here. Except those that fornicate with barnyard animals.

Good thing nobody has ever experienced a "complete engine failure" (whatever that entails) on an FJR then...

Closest thing to that was Eric's cylinders wearing prematurely, but that was traced to a mechanic's error leaving an unfiltered air opening into the intake. I don't think that was covered by warranty either.
You pretty much nailed it Fred. My failure was likely worn rings, rather than the actual cylinders, but end result is the same, low compression. The YES specifically does not cover low compression due to worn rings. And you correctly state that my failure was both a result of a Yamaha tech's error of leaving the throttle body to air box clamps loose, thus allowing unfiltered air and debris into the engine, and was not covered by warranty.

Filters? I mostly use the PH14610 Pure One, despite the Purolator folks stating it's not appropriate for motorcycle use and please buy their $10 filter instead.

FJR Flyer - not the courts, but the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. Manufacturers can't deny warranty claims based solely on the fact that a non-OEM oil filter is used. To deny a claim, they have to be able to prove the non-OEM part caused the failure.
Thanks for the backup, Skoot. The 'four young kids' syndrome has destroyed any chance of me remembering any details of value. That info was long gone and probably replaced with the number to poison control.
