I went to the Garmin site a few minutes ago to get some updates for my new geocaching tool (Garmin etrex Vista Cx) and stumbled across their Super bowl ad.

Since many of us are Garmin users I figured I would share.

My first thought was "What the hell were they thinking, that has to be one of the cheesiest commercials ever"

But maybe it is a start to make Garmin a household name like Kleenex, Band-Aid or...

Your thoughts?

Funny? Yes.

Cheesy? Yes.

Good marketing for Garmin GPS units? Ahhhh, don't think so. Should feature the GPS unit rather than the cartoon characters.

Wonder what demographic they are shooting for?

Sucked.

Former lead singer for Grim Reaper? None other?

It reminded me of this weird show I watched when I was about 8 years old. I can't recall the name of it, though. A younger generation in the room during the game thought it was a cross between Godzilla and the Power Rangers.

That would have been "Ultraman".... and I watched it as a kid too... :)

Well it's a damn poor start...I mean most marketing types keep foremost in mind the audience they are trying to appeal too. My 9 year old didn't care for it, my 5 year old thought it cool AND had a name for the guy, I thought it was crap. Maybe they have a very long horizon and are looking out maybe 20 years, but I don't have many 40ish buddies that it will sell GPS systems too. And I believe the average bike rider is somewhere in the mid 40 bracket.

Sorry, even with an engineering friend working in Olathe at Garmin, I'd say try again. :headbonk:

Regards,

B

Tip of the cap to you on that one, Groo. That's exactly what it was. Good call. However, I don't remember ever seeing a bad Meatloaf impersonator in the show as a kid.

Ultraman

The Garmin commercial was pretty bad. But I thought the same thing about many of the commercials during the game. What happened to the days when a commercial provided some information about the product?

All you ever wanted to know about Ultraman but were afraid to ask...

In the near future, sinister aliens and giant prehistoric monsters threaten civilization! The only one equipped to handle these disasters is the Science Patrol, a special police force with high-tech weapons and vehicles at their disposal. Led by Captain "Cap" Muramatsu, the Science Patrol is ready to protect the Earth from the ravaging monsters. But when the situation becomes desperate, Hayata, one of the Patrol's members holds the key to our salvation. Fate has given Hayata the ability to secretly transform into an amazing, superpowered giant from space. A being known as Ultraman!

Note, the "near future" was shown in one episode to be ... 1993. Instead of using his GPS to transform, in the show it was called "The Beta Capsule". I'll go away and think of other useless things now... ;)

The Losers

"Salesgenie / Garmin: Speaking of wasting money... Both of these companies bought one 30-second ad apiece. Do you have any recollection of either spot? Neither do I. Do you have any idea what either of these companies sell? Neither do I."
