Several interesting quotes from the Lite..

Riders shall not accept or receive assistance from other persons in planning their route or obtaining bonus locations.

Did we mention we’re also accepting digital photos this time?

Team Strange is notorious for trying to keep the team concept out of it's rallies. They HIGHLY discourage any type of outside routing help.

Starting location should be announced sometime if February. I can't wait!

I hope I win one of those bikes! I think I'd pick cbr600rr.

Any other FJR's going to be here besides myself and Stryg8r?

Free bike, huh? Does this encourage participants to "race" to the finish? Given that there is a prize having substantial monetary value, is this thing still considered an amateur event?

As I understand it, the bike is given away in a drawing, not to the top finisher. All rally finishers will have a chance to win regardless of their standings. The fact is Team Strange has a rigid stance against excessive speeds. And they have disqualified participants in the past for this reason.

The rally is more about planning a good route and executing that route; riding consistently, and getting a little lucky. It is NOT a contest of speed.

Yep :)

Can you name the rider in the box who was the talk of BL4?

Looks like we have a veteran riding with us this year Mr Behmer. Did you ride your FJR in the BL4?

Now I know who to ask stupid questions. Do you plan maintenance on the BL such as oil and tire changes? I've not had much luck getting more than 6-8 k on my tires and I see that with your run to Bonneville you put on over 9k in the 7 days.

I love that picture. After riding from Atlanta to the Bonneville salt flats...and averaging over 1,300 miles a day for 7 days, Behm does what any efficient LD rider would do. Step's into the box for the picture, rather than taking the extra time to reach down and move it.

He also finished 3rd overall in last year's Minnesota 1000. And that was riding two-up. The man can ride!

Yes I was on the FJR for BL4. No maintenance during the rally. I was running Avons 45/46 and usually got well over 10,000 miles from a set.

What about that guy that loaned you a camera in Canada?

Back to the drawing for a motorcycle: The BL5 website says it is a structured drawing with more chances to be drawn given to higher finishers.

That sure sounds like financial incentive to me. I hope the field of riders can keep their collective cool and stay safe with so much money at stake.

I don't think your giving the riders much credit there.

I'd say the incentive for winning the BLIIII is significantly reduced from previous BLs. In the past the winner got a free pass into the Iron Butt Rally a prize all the money in the world can't buy.

I'm not busting on the riders, but you have to agree this is unprecedented.

Only a handful of riders in any rally have a reasonable chance to win. In past BL's the rest of the pack knew they had slim to none chances of winning, and so they felt zero pressure to win and reap the coveted IBR slot.

But now with a structured drawing, any single rider, including the last place finisher, have a shot at winning a motorcycle. That puts MUCH MORE pressure on the whole pack of riders and is unprecedented.

Eddie's a smart guy, I guess he knows what he's doing.

Fixed it. How could I have screwed that up? What I should have said was Pete finished 3rd overall.

Beverage of your choice is on me Bob. See you at the Bonzai

While I can't speak for the other riders or rally organizers, I can say the drawing puts absolutely no additional pressure on me. It also had no bearing on my entering the rally. I'm still trying to figure out exactly why I signed up for the abuse.

Now the IBR entry is a different story, but like you said, that would only affect a handful of riders.
