What should I ask for my 06 FJR AE

What I paid or I didn't for another bike is irrelevant. If I got ripped, should I rip my friend so e pays for mistake? On the other hand if I got a good deal or even give away, do I have to give a give away? My question was, what is a fair price? The Fred makes it sound I should just list it in Craig's List and see what a stranger will pay.
What's more if Owsley paid $4,500.00 for a similar FJR with the same miles stock, wouldn't he have been better off paying more for one with RDL, Heli Triple, back off brake light, MCL Highway pegs, Givi mount, Power Commander III, grip puppies, and LED driving lights? Especially if he wasn't a mechanic and would need to pay for each installation?
It sounds like you want someone here to give you an objective price so you can leave your conscience out of the deal. But there is no objective price; it's worth only what you can get for it. Put it on Craigslist and see what kind of offers you get. I'm betting you get none. Does that mean it's worth nothing? Would you then give it to your friend? You've got one marker: a dealer offered you $5000. He'll add a couple of thou to the price and put it on the floor where he'll hope to get $6000. If you don't feel like being generous with your "friend" and asking for the $5000, ask him for the $6000. But please don't make us complicit in your trying to make money off your friend.

My bride and I have a guideline when it comes to "stuff" and "friends":

1) stuff is stuff. It doesn't last; if can be useful and/or fun, but it should never be "important". The important part is called "life".

2) the "golden rule" ought to always apply, but especially so with friends. Our life is always made better by the quality of our friendships, not by the quantity of our stuff.

So our guideline when it comes to friends is this: if we can't afford to make the 'stuff' an outright gift to a friend in need - or for a fraction of its market value to a friend who isn't in need - it goes on Craig's list, or gets traded in at the dealer.

In the situation you describe, since I know the dealer would give me $5k, I'd assess how badly I need the money. Then I'd offer it to my "friend" for $4k, or it would go on Craig's list for whatever I could get.

Of course, all of this is hypothetical. First, because I wouldn't buy the second one until I'd sold the first. "Cash for toys" always applies here.

That offer was terrific. Before my 2010 was out of the shop at the end of September, after new Mich 3s f&r, 26.5k valve check, fluid flush, etc I talked trade in on a new 2013 Ducati Diavel. I happily rode my FJR home without any regrets. Oh the offer??? $8k even. The dealers are going to be stuck with your (and mine if I'd traded) all winter and they need cash now, not more used bikes on the floor.

I'm just sorry I asked for the advice. First I only bought the second bike before selling the first because I could afford to. Second if I'd wanted to sell my bike for 5k I could have given it to the dealer that day. At this point my buddy can't bring himself to pull the trigger and not because he can't afford to. Just because he's that way about things. I probably would have agreed to split the difference at $5,500.00. My buddy isn't the type to search the internet and fly and ride like I've done. At this point I can afford to wait till spring and will likely put it up for sale in the spring. At the same time I'm done with my buddy borrowing my bikes and not paying for upkeep and insurance. If my buddy wants to ride he can buy a bike.

You guys don't account for the fact that my buddy rode all season on bikes I kept up, insured and so forth. We all know that this isn't the cheapest hobby. Tires, maintenance and insurance for a 5,000 mile riding season that he had probably set me back a thousand or so. If you guys think I'm a bad friend keep that in mind.

So you're saying your buddy rode your bike all season and never offered to help pay for tires or maintenance? Did you ask him?

I do no where you got this idea that an AE is going to bring top dollar at resale. What you think is"giving it away" is about what you're going to get for it. Around $5k +\-. That's it. If hou find a sucker or someone who just really wants it, maybe you'll do better. Maybe not.

However, if you ask for opinions around here, before getting your feelings hurt, realize what your asking. You asked for opinions and got them. Even the ones you didn't like. Boo-hoo. It won't hurt our feelings if you don't ask again. Next time if you tell us what you want us to say we think, maybe we can accommodate you...Maybe not.

I just didn't want any more opinions. Maybe I shouldn't have explained why I feel the way I feel, but at the same time I was getting opinions like, I should sell it for $1,000.00 less then trade in, or that I couldn't afford to do what I'm doing. I can afford to do what I'm doing. If I want to I can afford to keep both bikes. I'd just as soon that the favor you guys did for me was to not give me anymore advice on the subject.

I'll wait till spring, as I can afford to, and put the bike up for sale on the local CL. If they don't get me a buyer, I'll either keep it or give it to a dealer as a trade or consignment.
