Violione
Sir Loin of Beef
OK I've been a member of this wonderful forum for a little while now and the number 2 question I always get is: "WTF does Violione mean and how do you pronounce it?" Only one member other than my wife has known the answer to this question and that was Cello, who is also a professional musician. So here is a brief synopsis of the etymology of VIOLIONE:
VIOLIONE (Vee-a-Lone-eee) Italian
Violione is how the rest of the world (De, Sp, It, Pg, Fr) pronounces or spells Violin.
It is also the original name given to the Bass Gamba during the 14th & 15th centuries; this was the predecessor to the modern Cello and/or String Bass.
Some String Basses today still retain the flat back and square bouts and shoulders of the original Gamba body shape.
