I'm starting to look at getting a new bike.

My current steed is a 2005 BMW K1200S. The 05's are the first year for this model. They are very buggy & I have put out thousands of dollars in repairs, even after all the recalls were done.

Now I see this in my town: https://eugene.craigslist.org/mcy/4987374655.html

I'm leery of buying another inaugural model.

Are there KNOWN issues that are going to haunt me for the next 10 years?

45,000+ miles on my 2013...only problem is sub standard adhesive on the side bag Yamaha emblems..covered under warranty.

If this is not right can a moderator move it?

Try picking a less divisive thread title next time. Meanwhile, read the pinned threads in this area and you'll see anything wrong with the 2013...which is conspicuously light.....suggesting there's nothing wrong with them.

The 2013 FJR is not an inaugural model. It is the third generation evolution of the original 2002/03 issue of this product. It has gotten better and worse in this time, but the general trend has been up. I have owned 5 of them in several countries in the world and still have two of them today. One 2003 and one 2015ES model.

I have also owned several BMWs in this time and currently own two of them as well, one 2014 F800GT and one 2012 K1600GTL. Your assessment of the Beemers is essentially correct. I too have spend thousands, but mostly on farkles on those bikes and BMW has stood up to all the warranty and countless recall issues, even well beyond the factory warranty. Your bike actually will be due for a recall to replace the cast aluminum rear wheel attachment carrier with a steel part due to some breaking issues caused by incorrect torquing of the rear wheel. And this after twelve or so years in your case. Rest assured that neither Honda or Yamaha would ever do that unless forced to by the government.

Go buy the thing and enjoy ...

This photo is for my Arkie Buddy, rushes:

+1, Gunny; Beemers are expensive, but so is my other Girlfriend Penelope Cruz ese! My 2013 Yamaha FJR 1300 is bulletproof as was my 2003 FJR "Miss Lucy Liu"; FJR Forum Member Bret Gross is still racking up many miles on his now named "Lucille"! Both FJR's made many long trips to Mexico and The Peoples Republic of Canuckistan.

My 2013 has made two runs to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur and one to British Columbia. Just add fuel (they love Mexican PEMEX, unlike my 2012 BMW K1600GT!), change the oil every 5K miles, check the valves every 26K and enjoy the RIDE!

One last photo from the 3K mile Cabo trip of Don and Donna on our magnificent Yamaha FJR1300 (world's best motorcycle!), on the way home on California-94.

Davy Baby, Old Michael, his Uncle Dr. Rich and your Papa Chuy Viejo still want to ride to Playa Coyote outside of Mulege with you Hombre! Mas Caminos y mas Amigos, ese!

As we head south towards Loreto on our BMW's and FJR's, there's a lot of little coves, with camping areas such as Playa Coyote. I could definitely spend a few days/weeks/months/years there.

Perhaps, but on the same note here - Yamaha and Honda don't generally put out models and have civilians do all their testing to find the failures of their machines. I'm not saying they (Yamaha's) are perfect, but as a whole, they are very well tested and brought to the public with minimum issues, compared to a full on "Do Not Ride" declaration and inconvenience the public with bikes totally out of commission until they can fix the problem like BMW plays....

Not to mention final drive failures - which are stated by BMW to be IN SPEC with no recognition on BMW's part and passing the cost on to the consumer....

Not trying to start a war here but IMO - Yamaha to me and many others is a great deal more consistent in those reliability respects then BMW.

To the OP - I think the only issues stated on the first model gen 3 was the lack of over 80mph cruise control setting.... one member here replaced the ECU with a 2014 unit which fixed that issue, though spendy $500 ish..... I've yet to recall anyone with a 13 that had any issues other then that....

Warpdrv is correct, the Maintenance Costs on a BMW are much more expensive than any Yamaha I have owned (starting with two 1976 RD400's I had, red one was my track bike and green one was my work commuter bike!). But I will continue to support Berlin if I get my right arm and leg back from my 2/15 moto crash, maintenance cost were also expensive for Papa Chuy Viejo on Salma Hayek: So costly I finally had to get rid of SH, plus she was always eating tortilla chips in bed ese! Muy Caliente, JSNS!

For my Specific Northwet Amigo Niehart:

Wow guys, thanks for the massive input in such a short period of time. Looks like I found the "right" FJR forum.
Turns out that the 2013 in the CL ad has been sold. I suspected so since the posting was over a month old.

I am, however, still very interested in this 2012 with less than 3,000 miles:: https://cyclepartstriumph.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_163&products_id=863
Just want to make sure you realize that the 2012 would be a 2nd Gen FJR. As such, the styling will be slightly different, and it won't have factory (electronic) cruise control.

If it were my money I would go with a Gen 3. As others have stated, the 2013 was a refinement and an upgrade to an already wonderful motorcycle.

A more better deal.

And I bet there's an airport near Atlanta.

Yes, thank you!

YIKES! Tempting, but after flying there, riding it back 3,000 miles and using a weeks vacation, I'd be in the doghouse with SWMBO and have spent a lot of money on travel expenses. Hmm... I wonder if he'll ship it. I bought a Triumph Sprint ST from a fella in Colorado and had it flown to Portland and the price was reasonable. Certainly cheaper than going to get it.
