Where can I buy a steering bearing socket?

I have two torque wrenches, the Man Size in ft/lb and Junior Size in in/lb. The final torque of 13 ft/lb is just about mid scale on the Junior wrench. The initial setting of 37 ft/lb isn't as critical, and it's just over 30% on my Man Size wrench and just into the more accurate range of the wrench.

Here is a link that shows you how to make a steering head bearing socket for cheap. With the relatively low torque we are using on this nut, this socket is more than robust enough.

From a link on that page (https://www.freeinfostuff.com/TorqueExtension/TorqueExtension.htm), I plugged in some numbers and even with variation of the torque wrench angle to +- 10 degree (from 90 degrees) the torque was either increased from 37 to 38 or decreased from 37 to 36, a variation of an insignificant 1 ft-lb.

Cool. The hook type is perfectly fine then.

Or... may be this is a good excuse to buy that lathe/mill machine that I always wanted to make the socket?

(honey, I need to buy a lathe/mill to make this tool that nobody is selling on the web and I need it to make sure that my bike is absolutely safe, you know...)

Make up a mock-up of that wrench (a 12" wood ruler comes to mind) and go out to your FJR and see how that would work for ya. There may be clearance issues to turn more than one castellation at a time.

McMaster-Carr #6975A16 for $19.58. I don't use a torque wrench for this adjustment, too many variables, I need to feel the front end swivel. I always do this by hand.

to add my 1 cent to Mr. Twigg- the bars should not flop to one side or the other, but rather rotate smoothly to the stop.

To all of you who have made this adjustment in the past, does the adjustment (feel) change when the top triple clamp nut is tightened? Understanding what is going to happen might help with the challenge of getting it perfect.

BTW, I ordered a spanner from Gary.

Not with the Yamaha design. The top nut is tightened "by hand" and the locking washer is placed over both nuts (the slots in the nuts need to be aligned). Once that is done, the triple clamp stem nut tightens against the top nut and does not influence the bearing nut.

I ordered a few of those a couple years ago and gave the extras away. I figured if I was paying for shipping all that way, I might as well buy more than one. I don't remember what the shipping cost was, but the tool is a beautiful piece of machining and works great.

That's what I was just thinking. I am a proud owner of one of the "Just Roy" sockets from ~ 6 years back, but maybe one of the folks who are interested in getting one of these would be willing to do a small "group buy" from this UK tool maker to defray the shipping expense? It sure looks like a nice tool.
