Made an observation today and began wondering how many of us sit close to the tank, in the middle, or with the back lip of the seat against your tail bone.

Also too, why you sit in that position.

I had been riding all the way back but have learned that the angle of the seat (Gen. I FJR) keeps sliding me forward giving me a wedgie within an hour or so.

Is this some kind of "trick" question??

In the twisties, I'm humpin the tank. If I'm touring/cruising, towards the back (it's where the Rick Mayer seat puts me).

I think I'm one of the few who use the stock seat for long distances. I use all three of the positions you mention and sometimes move back so I'm partially on the pillion seat. That gives me four distinct seating positions. I also move my feet to at least two positions on the rider's pegs, and two more positions on the passenger pegs and occasionally I briefly hang my feet from the sliders.

I would probably sit up close against the tank more often if it didn't get so hot.

on the seat usually :p , unless I find a good bump in the road and get both wheels of ground, then there might be some daylight between the butt and the seat. The twisties, could be a little to the left or right and a leg against the tank.

Between the tank and the middle, I suppose - depending on what I'm doing. After reading Nick Ientasch's (sp?) book on sport riding technique I tend to try to keep 2-3 inches between me and the tank for "normal" riding". If I know I am going to be "sport biking" for a while, I scoot back on the seat, lay on the tank, and move my feet back to the pillon pegs. If I am on the seat for a while (200+ miles) I will occasionally scoot forward all the way to the tank so that I am upright for a bit. And, then there is the stand on your pegs and wiggle your butt position. I suspect most folks use various positions depending on how they fit on the bike, pegs added, farkles, etc.

Bottom line - there is no stock answer. You sit where it seems most comfortable and gives you the most control over your bike - which may not always coincide with each other.

Because I don't have an supper cushy made for me seat yet. I sit all over the place trying to stay comfy.

Also depends on what's ahead. Up front on tank for spirited riding, back farther for slabbin.

(neither of your options fit)

Or is it that your "wife's" name is Russel?
Hey wasn't that in a song? Hmmm

EDIT: Ahhh HA! It is in a song (sorta).

Lyrics here. If you haven't heard this song...you're missing out.
I'll have to see about acquiring that when I get home...
