ST.net has also hosted their Eastern Sport Touring Meet there from time to time. I've stayed there a couple of times, myself. Very nice place for the money. There is also gas/beer very nearby. Food... I'm aware of 2 restaurants close by. Might be a good pick for this event.

Thanks - it has potential - except for the fact that it is so close to Virginia. I have developed an allergy for Virginia that will force me to ride a good bit west to get to NC.

If Sparta NC is an option, the Alleghany Inn is a good venue. They host a MSTA event I attend every year and several larger motorcycle events. I can check with them about potential costs, etc if there is interest. The going rate is $67/night.

OMFG! Really? Virginia has some awesome riding. What is your issue?

Wow! Great rates. If they could handle the numbers that would be a good place. Except for the roads in the area though...

Yes, the roads are all horribly straight in that area. Actually, the Inn is fairly good sized. Not sure of the capacity, though. I'd say it'll work... or be really close.

Edited to add: bummer... conference room is only large enough for 65 people.

I'll admit to being a bit confused. I've heard that there are thoughts about opening this up to other sport bikes, but then there are apparently problems coming up with a big enough venue (motel) with the desired Mom and Pop atmosphere that can handle a big crowd.

The Motel linked to above looks like an ideal kind of setup. Park the bike in front of the room, everyone in the same facility, you could most likely sell-out the place with FJR people and have the run of the place. No other patrons to piss off with our camaraderie. Yeah, they have limited number of rooms and can only accommodate 60 something people in the conference room. Does the "banquet" really need to be in a conference room? I know that is the way it has always been done before, but that doesn't mean it has to be, does it? What if there was just a giant barbeque set up outside instead? How about a pig roast in the parking lot or something fun like that?

And, I don't know about other potential attendees, but I'm not sure opening it up to the squidly sport bike crowd is the right way to go. Yeah, some of us ride sport bikes too, and having "other bike friends" come along should never be an issue, but for the most part we are just a bunch of old farts on fat sport tourers. I'm not prepared to deal with the antics of a bunch of testosterone rich 20 and 30 somethings for my vacation. There are other groups that can accommodate those guys.

When I think about the ideal venue, I always go back to my first EOM at The Brier Inn in Lewisburg, WV. I know it has changed hands (at least once) and may not be as good as it was anymore, but that place was the perfect size, the perfect layout, and who doesn't love the roads in West By Dog Virginia?

I hope the comments are helpful rather than hurtful. I'm sure you guys will do a great job with the planning no matter where it ends up.

Keep it up!!

Fred,

Thanks for your comments - always helpful, and if someone's skin is so thin for this to be hurtful, then they need to troll the interwebs somewhere else.

First - discussion of inviting other segments of the community. The discussion I was involved with focused on extending the invite to the Yamaha S-10 crowd as well as FZ-1 owners with the opinion both platforms carry good size sport touring following. Jagermeister made this pitch to me as he has many close ties within the FJR family even though he's gone dirty. We're not talking about 20 something's doing burn outs & wheelies in the parking lot...

We have always welcomed the odd non-FJR rider as I value the brotherhood of riding, no matter what nameplate is on the tank. Geez, Griff left his FJR home and showed up on the hondapontamus. or was that a sperm whale?

Venue - blocking down an entire property would be great, for the points you made. The counter argument is it's a fine balance with the facility going from just right over to too small. It's nice to have the overhead of extra rooms, and the downside to that is tolerating other guests. The Brier Inn up in WV does possess all the features - rooms, restaurant (breakfast!) on site, lounge on site, plenty of parking, other dining options within walking distance, and a PITA manager (Heidi will probably 2nd that).

Last year, dealing with a off site catering company was not all that bad of a deal - except for the fact that at 2pm on Saturday, the owner told me he did not take credit card. Luckily, I cut my ride short that day (tire wear mis-management...) and I was at the hotel when I found this out. There were some tense moments as I worked through options with my credit union, and I managed to get cash wired to Hendersonville to cover the meal. I know now to get payment options in WRITING next time.

The only concern I'd have with setting up a parking lot BBQ is the fact that it's September in the mid / south east. We have always used our rain gear at some point during our EOM trip each year, and many times on Friday or Saturday. It's a big gamble to schedule a meal outdoors with no contingency options to get out of the weather. I love me some NC BBQ, for sure!

Lee has a pretty good option working in Boone. We'll see how it pans out, but I'd definitely like to get a venue locked down before the end of December this year.

Keep the discussion up, people!!

oh, parting thought - you did offend someone, Fred, Vader 2.0 is not happy about being called a "fat sport tourer"; he is demanding a set of Remus Ti cans and says I have to get the freaking cats out, whatever that means, and Mr Happy is ROTFLMAO pointing at me and between outbursts yelling "OLD!".

I've heard that there are thoughts about opening this up to other sport bikes

No, not kidding. Virginia can suck off.

stand by for pity me rant -

When you get a traffic ticket solely because you were the vehicle with out of state plates, and not 1/2 mile prior had mulitple 18 wheelers blasting past you in the hammer lane and tailgating you at the same time, you get a crappy attitude about it. 11 over (80/70 - garmin showed 79mph) in a group of 5 other cars, and the 18 wheelers all but smoke the brakes getting whoa'd down (my fault, completely, for missing that clear sign something was up), and the deputy agreed that "the trucks were really moving today". To top it off, as I'm getting my gear back on, I turn to have the deputy come flying by me getting back into traffic; no big deal, right? Except now the right lane is full of traffic running 90mph again, and I roll 2 miles down the shoulder to before I am able to get back into traffic. That was only because there was an on-ramp for me to use. Was he obligated to assist me in getting back into traffic by law, probably not, but he left me in a situation that was not safe why? He wasn't down the road in a new "hide".

I was polite, courteous, & professional - informed him up front that my license will show I have a CPL, but I was not carrying a sidearm at the time as I am required to do by law, etc.

A call to the patrol supervisor got a "I'll speak to deputy xxxx, as we are in the business of public safety."

End pity me rant.

I don't like Virginia. If I had been pulled over with a peg on the deck at 90, then fine, I deserve it and I'd gladly pay the price for admission to that race track.

I hope you were just kidding.

Doesn't that statement alone all but eliminate a venue?

Yes, the roads are all horribly straight in that area
Although we can't always be blessed with the type of entrance Cumberland Falls offered, but I'd like it to be as close to that at every venue as we can manage...

I have been to the hotel in Sparta for a ST.n meet .... ooooh a couple of years ago. It was good. If I remember we had a BBQ outside on the back deck. As for the roads they are as bad as SE Ohio and that's bad!

Townsend TN is to close to the dragon for my liking. You know Fred's worry about those sport bikers

I think we should Lee see what he can dream up in Boone first.

All I know is that Lee's routes from last year desrve another lashing. I didn't get enough time to spank them last year ( I know - my fault), but DANG... some of the bestest, longest, twistiest non stop curves I've ever ridden, bar none.

Ok, let me know if I can help out , and thanks for moving forward with EOM

Oh Lee dont have to dream he already has more in that area than you could do in 3 or 4 days and now that he lives there he finds new ones every day, and dont ask me where they are I would have to shoot ya if I told ya

A-mother-truckin-Men, Brother.

Lee is in continous route recon mode. I just got a video shot Sunday. Lee is one mean, morbid mofo - but the music of an FJR pulling hard towards redline on corner exit is the music that mends the soul, tempers the chill of a cold December wind and restores the faith that spring will come...

Thanks for the excellent reply Wayne. You make all valid points.

I know from our past private conversations that you are a conscientious guy and take the planning for EOM quite seriously. Heck, if past performance is an accurate indicator of future results everyone can be assured of a great time ahead next fall. I did miss EOM in NC last year, so if it just happened to be in the same general area it would be a bonus second chance for me.

And it sounds like Lee has been providing some hugely valuable local insight on the routes. That helps a lot.
