Is it hard to remove? How many years can you expect from a battery? I just bought my FJR, it is a 2004. I dont know if it's the original battery. That is the only piece on the entire machine with a question mark on it.

Thanks!!

gregg

Click on this: Owners Manuals you can read and download the manual for your FJR but can't print it without fiddling with the PDF permissions. This will have your answer as to where the battery is and what you need to do to access it. It's not real hard. The owners manual is full of all kinds of things that will be useful to a new owner.

My brother spells his name with two G's also, another Gregg.

It's hidden wherever those clever Japanese SOB's could find space. I hear bike built on Monday don't have 'em, yet Friday bikes have three..

Remove the 5 screws in the right front top cockpit. Take out the plastic rivet in the center in-front of the steering column remove the 2 plastic pieces or covers A and B. You will find the battery. Very simple. No issues at all.

Actually, my FJR's battery is under the C & D panels, as covered under the "Maintenance" section of the "FJR Tech" link I posted above.

YMMV.

While we're discussing it, Shackwell also asked about battery life, etd.

To answer those questions:

1.) Not hard to remove once the right side dash panels are removed.

2.) I got 3 years from my OEM though I ride my bike often because of mild Winters (No snow!) and keep it on a battery tender when it's not ridden daily. Others have replaced their battery after 2 years, some after 4 years.

Finally, Gregg...

Which the owners manual I linked to will straighten out.

all i know is the wife keeps her batterys in the nightstand for easy access in case of premature let down.
110volt really gets the job done

Oh yeah we were talking a superior 04 battery, just be careful of the tabs on the plastic panels to line up correct when reinstalling said panels.

While you have the cover off to replace the battery, it's also a good time to replace the blinker fluid. An 04 usually requires blinker fluid every 10-15k miles. If this service hasn't been done yet, it's worth doing.

I like the synthetic fluid better than the regular stuff, which you can find online.

Thanks for the tip on that site, Hudson, I've been looking for a metric screwdriver for ages...the one I used on the Harley just doesn't fit right... :yahoo:

When removing the Panels. What is the trick to removing the Quick Fastener?

I am trying to access the Battery on my 2008 FJR and removing the screws is easy.

It is the quick fastener thats got me at a stand still?

Google search fjrforum panel removal works for me..

And I didn't re-open a 3 year old thread......................

My 2005 has the original battery as has my 2005 Vstrom no battery tender . You can never tell ,but I believe cold climates do reduce the life of batteries . I have had several times very short battery life in motor vehicle with cheap batteries like 18 mnths and 8-10 years out of good quality batteries ,so buy a quality battery when you need one .
