Which oil? (I know, but I searched for topic)

Please dont trash me. I am new to site and just got the bike last Friday. My ques. is what oil is used for motor? I am asking because when I picked up bike, I asked for 5 quarts oil, filter and washer, so I could change it out at 30-40 miles. I didnt read the manual at the store and I went with what the parts guy said. He said 10w-40. So I bought it and went home. Then I looked in manual and it says 20W-40. So I missed a good day of riding today because all shops closed cause its Sunday. So what oil do I need? and what do ya all recomend? I am going to switch to syn. later on.

I know, there is prob. a thread here somewhere but couldnt find it. Sorry, but could ya give a new guy a break at least this one time. I promise I will try not to do this again.
