Well looks like I didnt get in the 2009 IBR so I think I will run one of these rallys this year.

Just wondering which I should get into. Looks like I neeb to decide soon because of entry date or filling up.

Any good opinions from people who have participated in these rallys in the past would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've done both (and alot of others) and I can say that George does his best to replicate the "ambiance" of the actual IBR. You will most likely be abused by same or similar tech inspectors, scoring and bonus rules will be based on IBR standards so you will get the flavor for the big event.

The bonus pack GZ had for the original Spank multiday rally was one of the best I've ever seen and was accurate and very good. The rally itself was very fun because GZ had many new and "out of the box" innovations for rallying such as different points for bonuses depending on when you got it, a rally within a rally. Some real good stuff. I will also say that GZ did a great job on Rally banquets and stuff like the plaques (first rate). WIth George, he sends you to things that you may have to get off your bike and do some hiking - more than I did on BL III (I enjoyed it).

Don't get me wrong - Team Strange events have their own ambiance and they are exceptionally challenging. Also their bonii are normally very entertaining and you will go to places you would never otherwise go out of your way to find (Laura Wilders Cabin...), BBQ shacks, Mexican Resturaunts etc...

Hope that helps you. If I had the time for another multiday this year I would do Spank - but that is just me...

You should ride the Spank.

Reason 1: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=102842

Reason 2: https://spankrally.com/spank/Spank2006_JimOwen.pdf

Reason 3: The 07 Spank was the best rally I've ever ridden.

Reason 4: The RM is an FJRForum member.

Reason 5: All prior Spanks have been based in the West. This might be your only chance to be this close to the start and finish of a Spank.

I have zero reasons why you should ride the BL. It's not a negative, it's just not a positive. I've never done any TeamStrange events so I can't compare. All I can say is, I'd rather go with the devil I know than the devil I don't know. In this case you can take the word devil literally. :assassin:

I'm biased to be sure, but SPANK would be..and is my choice. Zelenz's genius manifested itself in 2005 in a way that turned what normally would be a rally about time and distance and added this third...and maybe a fourth dimension that one needed a Cray supercomputer to crunch through permutations. Add on top of that the fact some were doing a lap around the permiter of 4 corner states while some were zigzagging through the middle was a fun concept too.

To run across three other riders in Animas, NM at midnight, figure out that George's tag on the back side of a road sign from weeks earlier had been painted over, but we could still make out "Set Phasers to SPANK!", then wonder how he got high enough to paint it (which he then told the story in vivid detail months later)

And then all of us do the Funky Chicken under the stars together...and present George a Polaroid because we luckily had been together..... Priceless!

Then his rally in a rally idea was just cool. I actually considered going to watch a movie while I sat for six hours in Los Alamos.

Then to have seen nooks and crannies of our country that I would never, ever seen was just icing on the cake.

I finished mid field...so nothing to right home about on personal performance, but then to see Owen actually figure out a path that exceeded the ralllymaster's own ideal route in points...more genius. As a result my game is better too.

With that I'm both excited and a bit nervous about 2007.

Finally, I think I got my best motorcycle picture so far from that particular rally. Morning after a monsoon of the WORST rain I have ever experienced. The kind of flash flood rain and lightning that actually makes you think about finding higher ground!

No question whatsoever..... do SPANK, and I'll see you at the Finish Line, which happens to dovetail immediately into the IBA National Meet.

I'm another bias "SPANK" rider here. I've done two of GZ's rallies and think he's an excellent rallymaster. The fact that he still rides in rallies I think helps him think like a rider when putting together a rally.

BL IIII was a first rate event.

I liked the staff.

My choice of the BL over Spank was mainly geographic.

They also had a couple no draw entries for the 07 IBR.

Sounds like GZ might be one of the more creative RM's out there so that might add to the fun.

Sounds like you can't lose either way.
