As some of you know my FJR sprung a leak. I haven't been able to work on her but this weekend looks good.

It looks like I'm going to have to strip off a lot of her plastic and while she's naked I'm thinking it'll be a good time to do something about the dreaded, and well known, heat problem. I'm thinking I might also put in a headlight modulator and some BRIGHT flashy tail lights on.

Any other ideas for fixes, mods, or improvements while I'm at it?

I'm just curious, did you think the bike had a heat problem before you started reading this forum?

If you have the tank up, throw a new set of plugs in her!

Did I 'think' the bike had a heat problem? Orval Redenbacher keeps following me around waiting for my legs to burst into popcorn.

That's a benefit... Skyway makes a holder for microwave popcorn for in-transit use, they actually come in a matching set, one for each side.

 
Since you'll have the plastic off you may want to do horns and other things requiring relays and wiring (lights, Battery Tender lead, GPS power, etc.).

 
If you don't have a tank blanket, that's about the best thing you can do for heat.
Tank blanket? Like an underlay of a sort? I bought some heat shield stuff from Summit Racing like like this, but a smaller piece and am going to put it on the FJR's tank. That what you mean?

I read somewhere on the Forum that a lot of the issue is because the fuel is pumped from the tank to the injectors and then, if not used, back into the tank. In the interim, the fuel sits next to the cylinders and bakes. I've given thought to mounting a fuel cooler between the last injector in line and before the fuel tank.

Alternatively, I assume there's a reason you can't just plug the fuel return line. I assume that the fuel pump wouldn't like it if you did that. How is the fuel handled on the Gen II bikes? IIRC, they got rid of the return line. Can the other fuel pump be retrofitted and then the line plugged? Obviously I'm way out of my depth here. :huh:

Install the exhaust driven a/c unit with blowers that come up through the fairing onto your lower body. You can run the blowers right off the battery with an "engine-on" relay. Comes in handy here in tejas. I'd show pics but my digital camera won't download to my computer.

Uhmmmmm... Odot...... Thats called a turbocharger..... The "Blower" is supposed to go to your Intake Manifolds....

Not quite. The item I got I bought from smitty141, don't know if he still does them, but feel free to PM him. It's a felt-type blanket with metal foil on one side, goes under the tank foil side down, keeps the tank from getting cooked, which in turn keeps your thighs from getting cooked. Made a world of difference.

Not much else you can do. Someone once discussed putting Gen-II fairings on his Gen-I, but the attachments are all different. Me, I don't have a heat issue since the tank blanket unless I'm stuck at an "evolution" light: one of those that's red long enough for evolution to occur.

Ah, the infamous heat mods. I performed the heat mods on my '05, but found it didn't help much. After cookin' for two summers I finally threw in the towel and traded my '05 in on an '07.

But just prior to getting rid of my '05, I was considering a new heat mod. I was considering mounting a couple of 5 inch 12 volt flat muffin fans back behind the engine somewhere, (in between the fairing sides); the thought being that the fans could pull the heat off the engine and route the heat out the bottom of the bike. I never pursued the mod so I have no idea if it would work, or even if there is space available to mount the fans. But it might be worth looking into.

This sounds interesting. My first thought was that it would trap the heat onto the engine, but I'm guessing you haven't had any problems with it.

 
I'll do a proper For Sale listing one fine day, but for now one of the items I have available is a Smitty141-built heat blanket for a Gen 1. Asking $10, includes USPS shipping within the US.

The tank blanket does help a lot. I had that done on my 04 just before our BRP trip and it made a big diference. Plus I put on the Baker Built Wings on mine. Those also helped. And synch the throttle bodies while you are in there.
