Hello, I am new to the FJR world, and as wonderful as it is, I don't understand all the whines and whistles that go along with that wonderful engine. I just bought a 2005 with 2500 miles, and I am amazed that it makes so much noise. Is my bike normal, or has this old duffers ears gotten suddenly sensitive?

Second question: My Great Blue surges a lot at idle, and also at speed. Can I expect that to be smoother if I buy a PCIII? Will my gas mileage be affected with a PC III

D

With the stock exhaust the bike is very quiet....and you notice the various mechanical noises over the exhaust. Also you can tend to hear things even better behind a fairly decent windshield bubble. Most don't think the noises are actually louder than other motorcycles.

Try searching on the terms whistle and whine. Often discussed.

GreatBlue,

First of all, the FJR engine makes a turbine like sound that may be what you are hearing. I would have someone else that owns one, ride it and give you a subjective opinion. Frankly it sounds like you are hearing more noises behind a windshield where you would not notice it as much with an other type of cycle.

As far as surges 3 things to check: 1-Was the TPS sensor replaced with the recent recall 2-You may want to do a TBS(Throttle body sync) 3-You may want to check the plugs and/or replace them.

I had the same situation and with the last 2 items, did a miraculous change.

OH yes, you can get a PCIII that may solve your problem and generally it will reduce your mpg by appx 5mpg. I would do the other items first before getting a PCIII.

What bike are you switching from? I switched from a naked bike with carburetors to the FJR and the one sound that surprised me was the clicking from the fuel injectors.

I Ride a Gold Wing 1800 and a SV 650 Naked
It's letting you know it's happy :)

Mine clicks and whines also. The surge can be helped by making the idle circuit a bit richer (Barbarian Jumper Mod). Unlike the PC thingie, it's free.

My GL1800 also lets me know it's happy with injectors clicking and the alternator whining and humming.

Sync the throttle bodies, check to see if the TPS recall was done, maybe change the plugs (blow out the hole the plug lives in before removing the plugs).

My '06 is in the shop right now for a whine that is most noticeable when it's cold, and at about 60 mph in 5th, when it is several notches above "noticeable". The dealer described it as "a siren". He tells me it is the primary gear, and Yamaha told him that they have seen a few cases, and some adjustments can be attempted. I hope it works! I can't imagine riding LD with that level of noise.

Kurt
