Looking it up on maps.google.com - it's 370 miles and roughly ~8hrs. If you want to see the route, use the following towns/cities as destinations; I can also print out a few maps.

Niobrara -> Butte -> Springview -> Valentine -> Merriman -> Gordon -> Chadron -> Custer

Those are about an hour apart in travel time, until Chadron to Custer. I don't know what services are available in Butte, Springville, or Merriman. Valentine is 3hrs from Niobrara, which might be a good lunch stop (?) and Chadron is another 2 from Valentine. From Chadron to Custer is about 3hrs.

My $.02 - I think if we rolled out of Niobrara between 8 and 9am we'd make it to Custer before sunset. I'll go with whatever the consensus is.

If you can't make it to Custer by 7 PM, don't worry about it. I'll be around after 7 and the next morning too.

Google maps says your route from Niobrara to Custer is 379 miles and should take about 8.5 hours

A lot of those little towns listed on the map along the highways in Nebraska are very small and don't have gas. I can't remember any gas stations between Valentine and Chadron, but there may be one.

Central time changes to Mountain time a few miles west of Valentine, so you'll get an extra hour there. Sunset will be at 6:55 MT.

I was wondering about services.. MapPoint doesn't offer any fuel stops. I don't have a GPS device.

I would think we'd be able to make that 150 miles on a single tank between Valentine and Chadron. I could bring my little 1gal fuel can for an emergency stash :)

Forgot about the timezone bonus!

I will probably leave home after 10am. Work wants me to have my new "leash" (crackberry) before I go.

Not sure what time all the rest of you are going to be at the saloon. I can be at the saloon holding a table for at least 5 around 4pm.

It is 170 miles between Valentine and Oelrichs, SD. There's a gas station there. That should be very doable unless your cruising speed is, uh, up there. I don't think I've ever HAD to fill up with less than 180 miles on a tank. Usually it's at least 200 miles before I am on reserve. 23 miles past Oelrichs is Hot Springs, with lots of gas stations.

Hang'n with Arline at the Two Rivers.

COOL! TC's going to have us over for steaks. :D Isn't Omaha kinda not-on-the-way from Niobrara to Custer though?
