I feel very fortunate that I was let go at the end of September, and picked up a job with my former employer's main competion three weeks later, with severance overlapping income the entire month of November. Felt good to be laughing last. That being said, I know that my situation is at least due to a bit of good fortune, and I consider myself very lucky in this time.
My suggestions, for whatever they are worth:
- Network, network, network. My job didn't just fall into my lap, it was brought about by past connections and persistence. If you don't have a LinkedIn account, get one, and start building a newtwork of people you know, and people that know them.
Get out of the house, as much as you can. This is partially for keeping your mind straight, but also helps your networking. Meet people, volunteer, etc...
Take this time to take care of yourself. It's stressful times, and you need to keep your dauber out of the dirt.
Look into alternatives. There are jobs out there that have a secure future, and it may be time to look into one of those. Re-education needed? Perhaps, but some of these careers have no downside future risk, and that may be worth it.
For me, the silver lining in these times we are going through is that it is a reality check for a lot of people and businesses. I truly believe we will be a stronger country on the other side, as people live more within their means, and businesses revert back to sound business principles.
