Funny. The other major dog sled race is the Yukon Quest. It is a bit longer than the Iditarod, over rougher terrain, takes place 400 miles further north and in February instead of the sultry days of March. The race runs between Fairbanks and Whitehorse and follows the Yukon River much of the way. I was a Trail Groomer for the race one year. I was on a SnoGo and stayed 2-4 hours ahead of the lead team to make sure the trail was marked and clear of obstructions. The German tire company Fulda sponsored the race for a few years. The poor Germans were stunned to learn that the village of Eagle, on the Yukon, was "damp" and no alcohol could be sold. There was a mandatory eight hour rest stop in Eagle, but I spent the entire time shuttling Germans to the top of American Summit where a guy named Woody sold alcohol of all types out of his cabin. The Germans were very happy.
