I dropped my FJR off at the local dealer to have the new fork springs installed. The instructions from Wilbers says 300mm of fork oil is required. The dealer looked in the Yamaha manual and it referenced 100mm is required. He found this to be a major discrepancy.

I checked FJRTECH.com and it references 100mm.

Are we just talking about two different ways of measurement or is there a mistake somewhere?

I suspect the 100mm reference if the amount of airspace after filling while the 300mm reference by Wilbers is the amount of fork oil to be added. Am I wrong?

Thanks for your input.

If your dealer believes only 100mm of fork oil is required, he is either an idiot, or one/both of you mis-communicated.

As you suspect, the 100mm figure is the amount of AIR GAP from the very top of the fork tube, down to where the fork oil begins!

As to the specific amount used to refill after draining the old oil... this depends on how thorough your draining job was. So... using the 100mm air gap approach, you are guaranteed the correct amount of fluid is put back in the fork.

Oil is measured in cc or ounces rather than mm and each fork is going to use around 700 cc or 23.5 ounces.

Thanks WC. You helped me understand the probable source of the confusion. The dealer read the 100 figure as milliliters rather than millimeters.
