Wow...I just spent about 4 hours trying to clear all traces of a Trojan virus called fakeav.mk. What a nightmare, it infected my browsers and wouldn't let me connect to the web for help. Then, it would reboot my PC every time I'd try to run anti virus software. I was finally able to keep the computer running long enough to install and run a trojan remover. I also had to edit my registry.

I still don't Know how it got by my anti virus software in the first place. Be careful out there!

The very best way is to start your PC in Safe Mode. That will keep that sucker from loading to begin with.

Then go into Run>msconfig>startup - BE CAREFUL HERE - uncheck any items you do not want to run at startup, including any programs you do not recognize.

There are some AV programs - like BitDefender - which allows you to run then in Safe Mode.

Reboot and use:

1) Anti-Malware

2) Adaware

3) Abexo Free Registry Cleaner

4) CCleaner

All available at download.com

Above all, regular maintenance like Anti-virus, adaware, spyware, malware scrubbing is essential to prevent crap like this.

And, do not open any email attachments from anyone unless you've spoken with them first.

QUICK TIP: As cheap as these flashdrives are now, buy one and place these programs on it.

QUICK TIP #2: an external hard drive is useful to backup and save important info - music, pics, docs - and they are cheap and easy to use. Staples has one through Nov 15th that's 500 GB (HUGE) for only $89.

It'd be faster to scrub the thing rather than format, reload, and update everything...

When I get a real nasty one, I use "Hyjack This". It's a little program that shows you everything on your computer that isn't standard Windows. You can kill most anything with it... only problem is ya gotta know what you're looking at, which ain't easy most of the time. But when all else fails, it's a handy tool.
