I know I'm going to get my cubes busted for this. I currently own my 4th fjr (04,06,07) which is a 2013. This bike is hands down the best fjr in the series EXCEPT for the windscreen. I may be in the minority but I really miss the auto down feature. I think this is a major step backwards in my opinion. Does anyone know how to retro-fit this feature to the 13?

Thanks, George

I strongly suspect Yamaha decided to save a few pennies. If I'm right, retro-fitting would not be easy.

I, too, like the auto-retract, tried disconnecting it, but reconnected it after just a few days.

+1 auto retract is good in my opinion. I miss it.

Yeah, I wish I could readjust my windshield to the correct height every time I get on the bike...
George, if you have a FSM bring it along the next time you join us for a ride so we can give it a gander and see if retrofit is possible. I'm guessing that it's about 99.1% sure that the necessary electrical and mechanical bits are not present.

Walter, what is the 'correct height' that a windshield can be set for that fits all occasions and should *never* be moved from? Perhaps it is your location that allows a one size fits all adjustment. On any given ride I adjust my windshield depending on how the temperature changes during the day, my speed, the weather and the kind of sight-seeing we are doing.

The correct height is obviously the one required for the moment.

With all of the electronic wizardry in the 2013 you would think that it would auto magically sense your height and road speed, weather conditions (precip and temp), time of year, arc of the sun and phase of the moon and set the perfect windshield height.

Did you all realize that to adjust the windshield height on the '13 you have to navigate through the right side multifunction LCD screens? Sometimes (as in usually) simpler is better. Yes, occasionally I confuse my windshield height adjuster button with the hi/lo beam buttons (I'm simple that way. Sometimes I forget my passswords and pins too!), but I would prefer that little foible over having to navigate through screens on the multifunction LCD. That whole shebang (MF LCD) is the biggest thing that is souring me on the '13 and later FJRs. The 80 mph cruise is no big deal to me here in the eastern seaboard states.

I do prefer to have the windshield not retract as there are many times I like to leave it all the way up (like to clean it?) and turn off the ignition. I'm not really appreciating whatever it is that the auto retract is supposed to do for you. Other than look cool...

Rather than thinking that Mamma decided to save some coin, I would pose that maybe she was actually listening to all of those vast majority who complained about having to unplug the stupid thing.

Jorge, mi amigo... consider those cubes busted!

Don't be too sure. And, maybe a bit ghey, I much prefer the looks with the screen down when it's parked.

... they could have put an option in the menu stuff to choose whether or not it would auto retract? Or, add a bit more wizardry and have it resume its position when the key is turned on?

If the mechanism is anything like the Gen-II mechanism, I think I'd want to minimize any movement it makes. Jus' sayin....

As for the perfect position, yes it depends. But 99% of my riding has the windshield in the same place, a certain sweet spot between buffeting and no ventilation at all. When it rains it comes up much higher and keeps my visor clear. I'd truly hate to have to set that thing every time I got on the bike!

I can safely say that I adjust the windshield alot based on speed I'm riding, temp, weather etc. Fred, the menu system is not a problem because I normally leave it on the windshield because that's all you need to adjust during the ride. The three set info display can be configured to any of the values so you set it to the things that you want to see, which in my case is outside temp, engine temp, and trip meter.Alan I did not buy a service manual yet.

Forgot to mention, one of the features the mama touts on the 13 is a faster windscreen .

George

I'm happy with it, as I ride with it all the way down 90% of the time, up for rain and cold. Maybe because I'm vertically challenged, but I find it quieter all the way down, plus in FLA I need the wind to help in evaporative cooling.

WTF George!

Unlike you, I've only had 2 FJRs. The first one having a difficult time trying to keep it's stupid owner on the road on AR 16. The replacement 04 came with the windshield switch fix. I didn't bother changing my first FJR.

I've gotta say that this is all 1 on a scale of 1 to 10. No biggy either way...but is nice to always start out with the screen where you left it last when you parked it.

If you miss the auto retract, you could always thumb the screen down when you park, and thumb it back up when you start out again, just for old times sake.

C'mon George...WTF! Over...

I'm like most here always ride with it down, except in the rain!!

So Geo,

I suspect that your ears must have been ringing this past week.

This very subject came up (more than once) at CFR, since we had Yamaha Canada at the rally, and (early on) the sober people there thought that you might have a valid point.

The drunken people OTOH, who were the vast majority (ever notice how close OTOH is to EtOH?), also thought that you might have a point, but they were unable to elucidate why, so I will relay the sober attendee's perspective of this from one of the drunken attendee's perspectives:

Problem with '13 windscreen retract (or not) is that you have to diddle with the command screens to do anything with the sumbitch.

Thas'sall I gut.

Well, I sure hope the '13 windscreen is faster than the competition like BMW and Honda. How embarrassing if your windscreen was slowest in class. ;)
