I just took delivery of a new 2010 FJR and the windshield struggles and shakes its way through each cycle up or down. Having owned a 2005 for about 6 years I'm sure this isn't kosher behavior. My selling dealer says yeah they all do that, but then he says that about everything-like the sticky pillion, and the missing caliper bolt. Another dealer told me it was a no charge feature. I found references to a grommet binding the arms in the nose cone on slightly older bikes; has anyone experienced this right out of the crate? Dealer says he will look into it during my 1st service, frankly I have very little confidence in his service dept. and will do 1st service myself, as well as most of the rest.

Wouldn't expect to see it on a brand new '10. The shuddering has been linked to dry guides in the windshield assembly. I have seen it in a couple of bikes, but it's definitely not typical. Here's the exploded view of the front end for reference.

Have the dealer fix it.

It's a shame you didn't pay him with a check that bounced, because you cold tell him that "they all do that"

I would not trust that stealer to add air to the tires, let alone strip down the whole front of the bike. There is a capable and trustworthy dealer in ScooterG's neighborhood, which I think is within reasonable distance from you, so drop ScooterG a PM if he doesn't chime in here.

Odd that a new bike is doing this. Might be bad dealer prep on assy by not lubing guides. My '08 developed this problem after about a year. I bought some silicone lubricant and sprayed down the guides. Smooth as glass now.

While I don't know what the dealer prep list actually is, it's probably just getting it uncrated, front wheel and bags assembled and double check the fluids.... I'll bet lubing the windshield mechanism isn't on the list. But we do know Yamaha skimps on the greasing of the axle shafts, driveshaft and u-joint... I'd just do it myself and know it was done right, but still register the complaint.

Ha! Should have thought of that. Incidentally, you are quite correct about the air in the tires, 3-4 lbs low front to rear, but I pretty much expected that. The loose calipers not so much, the b*s*a*ds.

Sad, I wanted to trust this dealer.

Might be a loose rubber (toss it, worthless) or dry slides.

If you lube the slides yourself, use an extension off the can.. in other words, apply the lube where it's needed, don't spray the entire area..

Barb?

Mem?

I'm only just learning the differences. Back then we only had to worry about the dreaded ticking disease, or the TPS failing and dropping you in the street unceremoniously, which mine did twice before I received the notice.

Going to go ride her now for the first times since the bloody brakes almost fell off.

Damn! This thing is even heavier than the last one! Am I a glutton or what?

What has to be removed to get to the slides besides the cowling?

And-Just got my dealer survey from Yamaha......

In my case, the stealer took it upon themselves to put a deep, wide gauge across the length of the LHS saddle bag, leave off the locks on the bags, (as I later discovered) strip a 3 of the plastic screws securing the windshield on and not torque down the front axle nut. Than had the nerve to treat me like a trouble maker when I refused to accept delivery of the bike until they gave me a replacement saddle bag from another bike in the showroom and lent me the torx key so I could install the locks into the bags - no way was I letting these butchers anywhere near the bike once I signed the paperwork. And yes, apparently the shop monkey at this stealership can't read even simple numbers printed on the swing arm, since my tires were substantially down in pressure from what is required.

My 2010 goes up and down smooth as glass. I get a little vibration in the windshield from the wind, but I suspect that is normal. Make your stealer fix it. It was anew bike. You have a right to have it right.

...Make your stealer fix it. It was a new bike...
Yes, that sounds satisfying to say. However, reality is that they didn't prep the bike right, and they pawned shitty bike behaviour as a normal function. Best to keep tools out of their hands and away from your new FJR.

The FJR is GREAT...it is just the occasional stealer that sours the experience...IF you hand them the tools to do so.

That's why this Forum and other forums with their helpful members; FJR Technical self help sites are invaluable to the FJR experience...and that doesn't even include the great rides/gatherings announced on the sites and the great ride reports afterward!

I know this is an old thread, sorry to revive, but my bike is also a 2010 and having the exact same problem. Did you ever come up with a remedy?

My dealer is trying to tell me that it is part of the scheduled maintenance so I dropped the subject with him at that point. I tried to apply some lithium grease with a long cotton swab, but either didn't hit the spot or it is something else binding... my guess anyways.

my 04 was always smooth, my 08 shuddered when stopped.... with wind pressure it smoothes out as it seems to take tension off of the guides. I sprayed with lubricant and it helped... but not perfect.

The dealers get paid by Yamaha to set up the bikes. They should never charge you for that. Not many people know that.

This was a helpful site when I was purchasing my FJR. https://www.seedealercost.com/

Sorry to prolong an old thread, but I just joined. This is my only complaint about the 2010 FJR1300 I bought about 18 months ago. The windshield makes a very loud rubbing sound when it it retracts (it sometimes does it when I raise it, but to a lesser degree). The dealer who I had perform the last service (not the one I bought it from) said "everything checks out" which was not too helpful. Glad to see some ideas here I can work with. Thanks.

Fuk.. It moves up and down.. u ever see how much "clearance" there is?

Jonny could put his dik in there sideways and still have room for the fat **** from Arizona to "walk about"

For fuks sakes guys! It is what is is..

At least you have an option ................. Unlike Hardley

I took all the bodywork off of my 2008 AE including the front cowling and windshield and cleaned and lubed the tracks with lithium grease. While I was in there, I disabled the auto retract. I was so sick of seeing the windscreen go up and down so often. I think that's what eventually dries out those tracks. Now I can put the windshield where I want and not have to readjust it after turning off the key. Much better and smooth as glass for now.
