Wings out or in to take heat off the rider?

I just got back from riding my 08 FJR and the outside temperature read 108 degrees. I was roasting from engine heat blowing onto my feet and legs. Should the fairings be placed in the out or in position to get more of the engine heat away from the rider? Any other mods that would help with heat on the generation II would be appreciated. I live in Las Vegas, NV.

 
Toe, those won't do much good when the temps are 108F.

@Rodman - You need a sun farkle, not a bike farkle. :rolleyes: Anything over your body temp and it's going to feel HOT no matter what you do to the bike. Deflecting air towards you is only going to suck moisture out of your body that much faster. Watch out for dehydration if you ride any significant amount of time or distance.

 
Despite the fact that this subject gets covered at least once a month - and most folks would tell you to do a search (me included), the rule is, "in to cool, out to warm". But practically speaking, I've come to the conclusion that the "vents" are only good up to an ambient temperature of about 90~95 degrees. They're useless above that.

As an aside, JC Whitney has some 12V fans that'll plug into the accessory socket in the glove box. You can mount one to your bars. It would probably work, but you'd look like a Pakistani taxi driver (particularly if you have a BeadRider on your seat...). :lol:

 
High heat.........90* and above consider using evaporation cooling products like neck coolers

Very high heat......upper 90*s and above add evaporation cooling vest

On long hot rides I use one of these inside my back-pad pocket of my mesh jacket.

I fill with ice at the drink dispenser when I stop for fuel then add water to top it off.

Constant drink while riding and also the ability to soak your pant legs if really needed.

Light colored pants also help.

As far as the "wings" on the bike, they are a little help in the "out" position during cold weather

by blocking the cold a bit more but are of no value in hot weather.

Although, I think that there would be a way to modify them into air scoops to direct heat away from lower legs.

I have thought about this but haven't done anything about it yet.

 
Keep them coming. I'm definitely going to get one of those cooling vests. The heat will still be hot on the lower legs though. I guess I can do what Brody suggests and soak the lower pant legs.

 
I do not find the built-in faring vents do anything. A cooling vest is the way to go , and Kevlar works well I find to keep heat off. Those temps are just plain hot. The best you can do is make it bearable , I stop often , soak my hair, and just wear under armor briefs under my kevlar jeans. Keep hydrated and stop a lot.

I rode at 112 degrees for hours on end day after day last July and all I used was full mesh riding gear, the LD shorts, a regular T shirt, and a 2 liter water bag from walmart that you wear on your back. I found my legs were much hotter while using the highway pegs. Also I stayed cooler with the wind screen up a bit, the hot blast was not helping me stay any cooler.

The key to it all is riding with full summer gear including real motorcycle boots that give you full coverage over your calf. I wear name brand mesh riding gear with mesh gloves and a dark helmet shield, in the desert I prefer the chrome shields and a light colored helmet.
