Winter tear down?

For the first time ever I am considering putting the bike up for winter - actually down for winter, my mc lift is in a basment garage. Once I put it down there I am really committed to keeping it there until spring as getting it out of the back yard is pretty tough in wnter.

Sooo. . . I am thinking about pulling off some of the tupperware to do some farkle installs. While I'm at it is it worthwhile to get into the bike more for lubing joints or checking anything of interest beyond normal maintenance items? I'm not looking for make work. My bike only has 11K miles on it. Any suggestions?

 
If your planning on keeping the bike very long I would pull the rear suspension bolts out and grease them as they will be all corroded in a couple years. The one on the top of the shock is OK. Also the 2 big bolts holding the side stand on. And of course the driveshaft splines on both ends and the foward U joint.

 
Just strip it right down to the bare frame. Only then, will you become one with the bike.......as long as you don't have any bolts left over. :ph34r:

You definitely should clean and lube all the pivot points. The only ones that may not need service are the steering head and swingarm.

Change all the fluids, including clutch and brake fluid and fork oil.

 
Thanks for all the replies. I will probably put it up this weekend & start working on it in a couple of weeks. Took a nippy drive Sunday for about 100 miles - it was 27 degrees when I left & 35 by the time I got home. Maybe time to do some wiring for gloves while I have it apart :)

 
Frank's had this treatment since new. In the walkout late fall, out as soon as the grass will take his weight. Every fluid (including forks & coolant) new. Plugs. Plus farkles. And, unlike many as related in stories here and elsewhere, Frank has never failed to start or complete a journey, short or long. Never. Not once. In 56k. It's a good plan.
