Anybody in the southeast with wiring experience that wants to be helpful? Yeah? I'll brings my bike, the lights, beer, food, and a helper (me) if you'll show me how to do this stuff!

Ok, I've searched the forum repeatedly (using Google). I've found some photos that are helpful but not enough. I've done a bit of wiring but very little. And none of it on a bike. I don't doubt my ability but my knowledge, lol, so I need some help.

1. I have hyperlites to install.

I found the sleeve of wires under the pillion seat, no sweat. But, how exactly did you (any you) run the wires from the lites by the license plate to the space under the seat? Photos would be VERY helpful here.

2. I also plan to install extra lights up front (fork, at the least) and detailed photos and wiring instructions would be helpful there too.

3. Do I need a Fuzeblock? I think I know the answer since I want to wire a Garmin and a radar detector at a minimum. What else might I use it for? Are there REALLY detailed photos with nearly step by step instructions here somewhere? (this I haven't searched for yet, I admit it, but I thought I'd ask while I have your attention).

Thanks for your patience, folks, and all your help.

Oh, by southeast I mean within reach of Birmingham, AL. I can't really run to, say, Key West ;) :p

I hear ya. It's a maze to try to figure out.

If there's one thing I know, it's the old timers on any forum get tired of answering the same old questions over and over and over.

What I'm finding that helps the best is to make a folder in your FAVORITES or BOOKMARKS of your browser called FJR.

Then, start searching. Find a product that might be beneficial, save it. Search for another thing, such as GPS. You'll find threads on how people power them up. Some folks link to older posts that have photos. SAVE THOSE POSTS in your favorites.

I'll get you started.

IF you find more info, please repost it here so I can see too. I'm looking to do the same thing, so I've got you up to where I am.

Maybe one of the old timers here will come along and give us some hints.

1. IIRC, I drilled a small hole in the top/rear area of the wheel well to run the wires up under the seat from the license plate and sealed it with silicone afterwards.

2. Wiring fork lights will depend on if you want to have a dimmer/switch for a start. I don't use a dimmer or a switch on mine...it was a matter of just running the wires up the forks (using the other lines as a guide of course), joining them and linking them to the homemade fuzeblock I use. It's not terribly difficult as long as you keep your wiring polarity correct.

3. You don't need a Fuzeblock, but they're nice to have. You can easily make your own fuzeblock; one of the FJR tech sites has instructions. I have a homemade one mounted behind the glovebox; 1/2 is "hot" while the other 1/2 is "ground" and the whole thing is switched (so it only comes on with the ignition...relay taps into the glovebox power for a signal). It powers my fork lights, GPS, and heated grips, with room for more. There's nearly endless options surrounding this particular item. One day I'll redo everything, to clean it up, and use a Fuzeblock or Eastern Beaver fuzeblock.

Have a read through on both of the major FJR tech sites and you'll pick up a lot...along with the goldmine of information in these forums. ;)

Disclaimer: I'm not an electrician...I just read up on the stuff here and elsewhere when I did mine. ;)

Yeah, I'm a long-time member and moderator/admin for an [unrelated] email group. The same old questions/issues do get old but I really couldn't find the things I asked about. Still can't. But that's ok, I'll figure it out eventually. ;) Apparently there aren't detailed photos out there anymore so I'll have to learn as I go.

Thanks for the links. I've been collecting info and saving it but haven't taken time yet to get it all into order and figure out what, exactly, I'm missing. When I eventually do that I'm sure I'll post it.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been hitting those other sites too. What you've said helps a lot so I appreciate it. I find tidbits like this here and there and I'm slowly bringing it all together. I'll get there! I just like to have a very clear plan when I go into something like this so I'm trying to get all the details covered before I turn a bolt.

Thanks again for the responses!

I hear ya. I read about your dimmer issues. Had I been you I might have thrown a few things by the time I'd finished.

I've been through thst site with a fine toothed comb and I have these links saved already. In the first I wish they'd had photos of where they ran the wires so we non-electricians can have the next best thing to seeing it with our own eyes.
dig in, pull the seat.

look at where the gaps are out the back (near the existing bulbs, lenses, etc.

route accordingly.

wrap your wiring in a loom to avoid abrasion.

worked for me when i made the page.

multimeter to dope out hot, ground, and such.

extract the needed pin(s) from the gang connector, add your wire to that pin and re-insert it into the connector.

If you've never used a pin extractor, then this is a good resource.

https://www.ncfma.org/downloads/ampextractors.pdf

Once you understand how the extractor works, you can often do the same thing using a small, flat-bladed jeweler's screw driver. Just look closely at the pin and the little tab that pops out to hold the pin inside the connector. In figure 2 they call it a "locking lance". Depress that tab as you gently pull the pin out of the back side of the connector.

Bounce's suggestion to certainly the cleanest way, and a superior technique, to tap into the needed electrical signals. But I'd point out that an alternative approach, still giving good results, is to use

Posi-Taps. They have minimal impact on the existing wire's integrity (unlike the guillotine-like ScotchLok wire connectors), and you might find them easier to use if you've never disassembled gang connectors before.

Thank you! Bounce, you gave me even more great advice but you lost me at gang connectors, lol. So, thanks to you both for a mix of ideas I can use.

Here's a question: to run power from my battery back to under-the-seat (for a fuzeblock or similar) I've read I need to lift the tank (makes sense). Is it simply a lift and support so I can get underneath or will I have to disconnect anything other than mounting bolts?

I feel your your pain Bust, or more acurately, I share in your anguish. Although I am not putting a dimmer on my lights, I am trying to stack my new lights below my first pr. sharing the same bracket. Just when I think I have the grounding wires and power wires figured out, I go to hook it all up ...... and nothing! GGGRRRRRRRRRR

Short answer is you don't have to disconnect anything other than 2 bolts at the top (front) of the tank and remove the trim piece by the seat then loosen the bottom bolts, take a short 2X4 and use it to prop the tank up.

Try looking here. I just did this and I'll try adding some pictures in the next few days when I have a few mins.

Thanks! Recently a few people have posted about installations or asked questions and received detailed answers that pretty much answered mine. I've picked up enough info here and there to feel pretty confident installing electrical components now.

If you are still having issues we are planning Tech Day IV in Owosso, MI at the infamous Casa del Bust. The theme for this session is going to be electrical and we are going to be attempting to get all the electrons in BikerGeek's Gen 1 to flow in the proper direction. I will be installing a Fuzeblock and a set of Clearwater fork aux lights that I have not gotten around to installing yet.
