Yowser.... almost had a little nasty with a roundabout today.

Since winter has taken a respite here these last few days, temps soaring as high as 55F, I decided to wake the R1 out of hibernation and take it out to the high plains for a little spin. It was the first time I had the Yammy fired up since last October.

Came upon the roundabout less than a mile from my house, and was so excited to be back on the R1, I had forgotten that the Dunlop Qualifiers really need a little heat in them to grip at lean angles.

Went into the roundabout a little faster than necessary, and that rear Qualifier started to step out on me after initial turn-in!

Decreased some lean angle in a hurry and the Qualifier hooked back up after just a brief little slide. So all was well, but it definitely woke my *** up in a hurry! Took things a little less aggressive the rest of the 70-mile jaunt. It was still quite nice to have The One back out on the road.

Guess it's still winter, after all....

I did similar a few years ago on an FZR1000. Pulled out of the street onto the main Road, on a stone cold tyre. Clear blue sky bone dry road mid winter. Bike upright opened the throttle and the back tyre let go as if I was on ice. Legs everywhere, bike weaving. Managed to stay in control and calm things down. Felt very stupid and somewhat damp in the seat area!

Well, the rear Qualifier only stepped out about a half-foot to the left, not brutally bad, but enough to get my attention, that's for sure!

Did something like that on my Busa before. Glad you pulled it back in line. Winter is still here, but Spring will be coming soon! B)

yeah, it's supposed to be up in the 40's next week. maybe i'll take the bike to the dealer for service. glad you're ok after your pucker moment WC.

Rode into work this AM and found out that even though the roads were salted and looked dry, black ice was everywhere once I got off the interstate. Had the back end get away from me twice while accelerating. I needed one of those astronaut diapers by the time I got to the parking lot at work 2 miles away.

Wont make that mistake again!

those astronaut diapers are only good on 900 mile trips.
How do you know that? And do you know of a good source? The weather out west has been pretty strange tonight. My car was being blown around pretty good, so if I was on a bike that equipment would have come in handy.

the diapers also only work when you're rocking back and forth, contemplating the murder of your love rival. i think it helps in absorption.

I just got my FJR out after 10 weeks of ice on the neighborhood streets. It's been Winter HELL here in Denver. We normally have decent weather and fast snow melt. It felt great to ride again, but very aware of tons of sand left on the roads. C'mon Summer !

Warchild,

Glad you had a successful recovery...made me nervous just reading it.

I, too, have to be patient in this iffy weather and may the good stuff come soon.

Warchild,

You are not a squid appearently. :D

The first thing a squid would have done was run the imaginary chicanes on the road to warm up the tires. After 10 miles yours should have been red hot (If you were a squid B) )

Uh, Warchild my man. Which way were you going around that roundabout? All of them up here in the Great White North go counter clock, or were you turning right to get out of it?

I am one of those visual guys, just need to know.

Ride safe my man.

Well, think about it.... as you correctly observe, the travel direction in roundabouts is indeed counter-clockwise.

So......

One turns/leans right to go into a roundabout..... just like one turns/leans right to go out of it.

And in my scenario above, upon entering the right-hand lean a little too fast on cold tires, the tire stepped out to the left-hand side (as you sit on the bike).

;)

I've never, ever done anything that stupid...

But, I have this "friend" who did the same thing - had to turn around and go back home to change his underwear...

Took me.. er, him by surprise, it did...
