Hello All,

My father is in need of a new motorcycle and I found a used 2005 with about 5k. Would all the 05 owners recommend it? What issues are there to be aware of? Ticking, etc...

Thanks,

Jack

Yep. If it's clean and documented (service and uncrashed) scoop that mutha up. What's the asking price?

If it has YES for the 4 years (meaning 3 past the basic 1 year), has ABS, and checks out interviewing the seller and doesn't look trashed...I'd do it a second. As my '05 racks up about 70K now...I'm thinking of looking for another low mileage Gen 1 either an '04 or '05 myself.

..then of course...it would be price....but that's a whole other discussion.

I kind of did, mine was a dealer demo bike with 8800 miles on it. No complaints and saved lots of cash.

No. They're gay and ugly.

Would all the 05 owners recommend it?
Probably, but they're also....
Don't worry about Bob, he just fantacizes about us wanting him.

I just turned 40k miles on my '05. I love my bike. The Gen II '08 entices me because of some of the new things that Yamaha made better:

1) Heat management (there are plenty of easy aids for this) 2) Gen II has been a ticker and those are it. Those are the only reasons I would trade my '05...and mine isn't a ticker...yet...and the heat problem is greatly mitigated (but not fixed) by a bagster. If your dad plans on solo riding, the heat isn't that much of an issue anyway, I really notice it the most when riding 2 up when shifting around is more difficult.

You shoulda scarfed up Effjay's '04. That thing had a motor! :dribble:

Defintely...if it has the YES, no wrecks, maintenance records and the price is right I would in a second. Bought mine with 8k miles and now at 20k miles it's still great. Mine was being sold at a dealer where the guy had traded it in for a Goldwing and I was able to call him to ask further Q's. Also called the YES number in the pouch and talked to some woman who verfied there had been no Yamaha dealer reported work done on it from a warranty standpoint.

Jack,

This may not be popular, but I would not.

I would not be worried about the tick either.

I would be worried about the enjoyment factor....

How will your dad ride this bike?

Have him go and try it out, have him gear up and then let it idle until it reaches four bars on the temp gage and the fan kicks on, then see if he will be able to with stand any build up of heat on himself, as the newer bikes 06/07 and now 08 have addressed that some what.

Also, is your dad in good shape? this is a bigger bike in gerth, so if he is not 33 plus inseam, then it may be an issue....

Do not get me wrong, I still like my bike and guess I will be riding it for many years to come, unless i go 08, or something smaller in size/ weight.

Does he want to ride on back roads, ie fire roads etc? if so then this may not be the bike.

What is his riding back ground? cruisers? Do not get me wrong, he will not be able to knock the silly grin off his face, when he rolls on the throttle of this beast, but he also has to be aware that it can get away from him that quick too.....

So, does it have a yes warranty(extended Warranty that can be transfered into his name?, Is the size of the bike good for him and will the heat or non heat that this bike may or may not place on the rider bother him?

Hope this helps....

MIke

is an '05 FJR with 5k miles a good bike - hell yes...

is it the right bike for your father and his riding style or abilities? Only you and he can assess that.

My '05 has 47k miles and runs very well.

It's strange how on my bike some days I never notice any heat out of the engine at all and other days I notice it but I have never said "oh, that bike is too hot to ride so I won't."

Any year model FJR is one hell of a ride for the money.

Got mine used with 4k and already at 10k in three months and riding everyday.

Capabilities of rider and proposed used are the biggest issues outside of the standard issues with buying used vehicles.

Would buy my bike again.

Would I....an '05?

Not a snowball's chance in hell. That color would gag a maggot. Even though, as bad as it is, it's better than the '06 color. :)

If anything happened to mine, I would have no problem replacing it with another just like it. There must be some real wusses riding these things. Yea, it's hot, but never to hot to ride. Playing with it coming home tonite, holding at 4500 rpm first gear, 35 mph and just admiring the flawless sound emitting from below. fred jr

But then I really like the looks of the black.

I owned an '05 for two years. Great bike. It never 'ticked' or had any other technical problem. Mine had ABS, although (luckily) my ABS circuitry never had the need to engage. Nice feeling to know it's there though!

My only reservation would be, under what conditions, temperature wise, would you expect your father to ride? With temps under 85 degrees and lower humidity levels my '05 was a great ride, but during the summer months, on higher temperature and humidity days, the heat coming off the engine was definitely not pleasant. I performed the 'heat mods' which helped the situation some, but not nearly enough. I ended up trading my '05 for an '07 for this single reason. (The Gen II FJR's, ('07's & '06's), have much improved heat management technology.)

I remember riding my '05 two-up once in temperatures near 100, with the humidity level up around 80%. It was definitely an experience I would not want to repeat, and I was very happy to reach my destination and get off the bike. If it wasn't for the heat issue on my '05, I'd still own it. On the plus side, on cooler days, the heat coming off the engine was nice!

Perhaps some Gen I FJR's run cooler than others. You'll probably notice that some Gen I owners do not consider the heat to be that big of an issue. My suggestion is, have your father test ride the '05 on a really hot day and see for himself.

+1

I rode mine w/ 115 heat indexes and humidty near 87% a few times, just drank a shitload of water. Anything above 85 and you were definitely aware of the engine, but I think any bike like this lets you know it in those temps. Plus, I never went out w/o gear, no matter the temp.

Mine was taken from me this past July by a cager :angry2: . The good news is after 2 months of dickin around w/ too many companies and their ****-ups I'm flying out to buy another 2005, this time w/ ABS, next week :yahoo: . I coulda bought a newer one easily, but I loved my '05. It doesn't hurt that most of the accessories I got for it only fit/match the '05. Good luck w/ the bike if you guys get it I missed the hell outta mine.
