Hey folks, anyone have an old gps laying around they'd like to part with? I finished up my dash shelf install last night, and the mounting for my 550 and streetpilot 2720. Hooked up the 2720 and nothing, won't turn on. Tried the ac plug and still nothing. Opened up the case to see if there was anything obvious, and the inside of the case smelled like it had released the white smoke. So apparantly something fried it :(

So looking for something not to expensive and waterproof. I just use that GPS for tracking averages and miles traveled. I use the 550 for routing. Would prefer something in the 2720/2610 range, since the cords I have will work for them. But open to other options.

Here ya go: Walmart: Garmin Nuvi 40

Waterproof? Put a zip lock baggie over it when it rains.

Not trying to be a wise guy, but it works for me.

Pretty good rule of thumb:
cheap **** ain't good.

good **** ain't cheap.
I agree - that's why I'd really prefer to find another 2720 or similar. I'd rather have something that was good in 2007 instead of something that is cheap now

Also, I'd like to not have to redo my mounts and buy new power cables.

I stuck one of the Peaklife 3.5" GPS's on mine ( From China) for something that would stay on it all the time and be waterproof. It is really a lot better than I thought it would be.

You can find them via ebay for $150'ish

Example auction:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/cheap-Free-shipping-3-5-inch-waterproof-motorcycle-GPS-car-GPS-/321122213929?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac4602029&vxp=mtr

(I don't know if this is a good seller or not, I just picked one of the many auctions)

The bad: Forget trying to use it for music as well as gps, you can use one of the applications or the other, my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 has waay more capabilities than this thing does)

A bit hard to read in full sunlight sometimes.

Mounting is not straightforward, I had to glue the bracket to a Ram mount for what I wanted.

The Good:

The routing is really good and it has lots of POI's in it already. It aint garmin software where I could just throw on a KML route, etc... But it is nice as a backup that is always on the bike. I still prefer to use my phone for navigation because I'm also routing audiobooks via bluetooth, it will interrupt the audiobook to tell me to turn, etc... works better for me, but if it is raining I won't have my phone out in the open.

Take a look at the Garmin Quest. I've been running one for several years. You can pick one up on ebay pretty cheap and they are about the same size as the 2720. Also water *resistant*. I can testify that they aren't waterproof but they're fine in the rain.

Thanks for the offers and suggestions folks. Looks like I found another 2720 at a reasonable cost. Remind me to get the polarity right this time

If that 2720 falls through, keep an eye on amazon.com. About a month ago, I scored a new old stock 2720 there for $80. Never registered and I was able to use the free onetime map upgrade.
