I'm looking for some nice earbuds for riding. I'll trade or buy, let me know what you have.

Thanks

Brad:

I've got a set of ER6's that I've used sparingly. Cost was like $80. Lemme know if you're interested.

Barry, I'm curious about those ER6's. Not trying to horn in on the offer you made Brad, but I'd like to know how well they isolate road and wind noise, and what you replaced them with that you like better, or why you moved away from them. Whatever buds I use with my Ipod don't do the job. Even at full volume, I can barely hear the music at highway speed, and I know it's not good for the hearing to run full volume anyway. I'd like to know your opinion. Thoughts from others also appreciated.

p.s., In case Brad doesn't want yours, maybe we could discuss it a little further, but I'd still like your thoughts. Thanks.

I used to use ER's but after a while on longer trips my ears would get irritated from the ear buds. I ended up going with a set of custom molded ear buds from Big Ear Inc.

I use the yellow side with the hole through it off of these (pull them apart) on westone UM1's and they work great. It's all about getting them comfortably inserted deep enough to block the external noise. The foam plugs that come with the UM1's don't block nearly enough noise for me.

Thanks so much! I don't know crap about these things other than the $10 Skull Candy ones aren't working out and staying in place.

Thank you

I like the ER6i's. I have a big Rifle windshield and reduced wind noise. With the ER6i's wind noise is blocked almost completely. The sound quality is very good. I find them comfortable. I have thought about custom molded plugs. I think they may be more comfortable, but can't picture much better sound quality.

+1 on the ER6i's. Commuting I ride with flanged ear plugs rated at 33dB attenuation. The ER6i's are similar in design and block wind noise just about as well. On long trips, I've shut off the music and the ER6i's keep wind noise at a more-than-tolerable level.

Another vote for the ER6i's. I had mine for about 3 years before the wires got pulled out of them when I wrecked my bike. I will be replacing them with another pair of the same shortly. I found I had to go to the foam inserts, because the other ones hurt my ears after wearing them for more than a few days in a row.

I use the ER4p. They support foam or tri-ribbed rubber (come with both). The foam cuts too much noise for me (can't hear my own bike, only feal it). The tri-ribbed I also thought cut way to much of the noice (rated lower, like the ER6), so I cut parts out of the outer rib and that worked great in allowing some noise in. While I do listen to music, the volume is very low, otherwise I am back to the problem of not hearing my own bike.

I have been working on a circuit that I can press a button have two microphones cut into the audio so I can listen "loudly" to what is going on around me if I need it.

Thanks guys, I am probably going that route. This is a great place where everyone "speaks the language"!!!

Thank you again! :)

I tried various buds and the $20-ish SkullCandies were the ones that fit for me. Every 4 months or so is about when they get lost or start to sound a bit muddy and I just get a new set.

I don't think there were ER's but something like that. It did the same thing to my ears. I also went to the molded ear buds. In fact I accidently pulled out one of the leads and they made me up a new pair from a new mold for no charge! The company was EARS INC. And that was after three years.

+1 of Big Ears, pricey but worth every cent. I was using Shures 210 and they were fine for short trips but longer trips they would bother my ears, I have found that using a skull cap that covers your ears help keep the buds in place when putting on your helmet.

I found a solution that allows me to use the ER6i's all day.

The stock tips (flanged and foam) on the ER6i's irritate my ear canal after a few hours, so what I did was to install SeboTek hearing aid tips (not the open-fit style). These run $10 each (so $20 for two tips) but are supremely confortable and go further into the canal, sealing out much more noise. Since they are very soft, I have added some internal support (i.e. heat shrink tubing) to make it easier to install.

I've found these to be much more economical than custom-made ones, and they have lasted much longer (I have used Starky and two pairs of the Challengers). Although I was happy with the challengers, they stop working after two years, and recently after FIVE attempts they were unable to make a pair that fit my ears well enough to bring wind noise down to tolerable levels.

If there is any interest I'll see if I can figure out how to post pic's of my ER6i's and find a source of less expensive sebotek tips.

Crap. I'm returning my newly bought Challengers for a rebuild for the same exact reason you mention above - they don't block wind noise once the wiggle free from the ear. Disappointing to hear (pun intended)you tried 5x. Sigh.
BTW, here's some info regarding ER6's..

. The ER6 has been discontinued, replaced by the ER6i.

. That's too bad, as the ER6 had better bass and overall frequency response.

. Most importantly, the ER6 has higher impedance than the ER6i's. My StarComm Advanced units (two of them) both had problems trying to drive current into the lower impedance ER6i's, causing thermal overload and audio quality degradation. That's why I decided to try the Challengers.

More ER6/E6i info here.
