XX'r Looking At An FJR

Test rode an FJR recently and posted the following on the XX site. Someone from that site sent me a link to your site.

 


04, Silver, ABS, 21k miles, heated grips and top box. VGC and at a local dealership. Price is $9500. Brand new was $12k plus. Does that sound like a fair price?

I'm back! Overall a nice clean bike. Runs very strong, slight buzziness in the back half of the bike at 70 mph in high gear...doesn't happen at 65 or 60 mph. An FJR trait? Perhaps the Givi trunk? Also, windshield flopped around like a Zero Gravity ST shield....hmmm...

 


I go back to the dealer and tell him about it. Also tell him about an 04 w/7.5k miles for $10,000 in the local Want Ad. He walks me outside and tells me about another bike.

 


05 FJR, Blue, ABS, 5k miles, new tires, larger windshield, and bar risers, for $10,500. It belongs to his brother who is not tied in with the dealership although it was bought there new. Original 1 year, unlimited mileage warranty went out 5 days ago. No biggie. Can get a two year additional warranty for $700 more.

A little about my riding. I sold my 97 XX w/83k miles. Put the bulk of it on in 4 years. Sold my 02 XX w/20k miles. Put half of those miles in 5 months.

 


What is appealing to me is the shaft drive...one less thing to maintain. More power is a plus but by normal cruising speed in 70 to 75 mph (or in CBR speak...no more than 5mph over the speed limit... :lol: )

 


I understand that the info that you give may be biased but I'd appreciate your info on the aforementioned 04 FJR.

Go with the 05, 04 price high. Actually, can find spanking new 05's for that (10,500) with a little shopping. Trunk does cause some weird vibes and motions, nothing fatal. Many shields available, larger and mucho better coverage. If you like putting on the miles, no better bike. Well represented at IBA rallies. Good first post, instead of telling us how it should be done, you ask advice. We like showing how smarts we is.

Oh, and D&H sells 3 year extended warranty for $389. 05 would still be warranty-able with a dealer inspection IIRC, but good luck finding a dealer that will cooperate.

That sale price a pinch on the high side, about what I would expect paying a dealer for a bike that came out in 2003 and has 21,000 miles on it.

You might do better by shopping around some more, check Cycle Trader, etc.

Definitely go with the 05 ABS for $10,500.

I sold my first 2005 ABS with 11,500 on the clock for $10,500 in May. It had heated grips, powerlet, and Moko sliders.

I personally think the $10,500 is fair for an ABS. As Radman stated, you may be able to find a new non-ABS 2005 for around $10,500/probably a bit more. But if you want the ABS, then the bike above is a good deal. ...a much better deal than the 04 for sale.

Agree, the 05 sounds like a better deal. The ABS vs. no ABS is an on gong debate, but you can't really fault the bike either way. Small vibration at 70+ can often be reduce or eliminated with TB sync, bar end weights, changed grips, etc. I've never found it to be an issue. After some initial break-in maintenance, this bike has a lower maintenance routine than many. Valve adjustment at 26000 miles, shaft drive, EFI. Oh ya, and it is fun to ride!

Dealer is to high I own an 05 with abs will not buy another bike unless it has abs it will help keep you out of trouble in panic stops or having to get on the brakes hard , like sudden tail lights from a cager. Why not buy a new 06 just a few dollars more, if i was you i would buy a new one ( that's me tho) good luck.

Just buy new and bypass the potential headaches that a used FJR might bring. I paid $9,499 (10,069 OTD) for my brand new '05. www.buyoutofstate.com

If you have to go used, buy the one with less mileage.

Don't want to sidetrack this interesting thread but I'm in a similar situation (although different 'coz I'm in Quebec). I've been looking for a new or used '05 FJR w/ABS for over a month. Couldn't find a new one up here but used ones are starting to show up in the used bike ads. Here's one I'm going to try out on Monday (my translation from French):

"For sale, FJR 1300 2005 w/ABS, 3,500 miles, warranty to May '06. Would take as partial payment: Hayabusa '99 or younger or CBR 600 '95 or younger. Reason for sale: not yet ready for 'Sport-Touring'... God I miss my busa."

I'm worried this might be a young rocket jockey who kicked the sh... out of this FJR

Also, he's asking 80% of purchase cost which seems reasonable but I'm wondering, as W/E Rider suggests if I shouldn't wait for the '06 ?... Problem is that could be 3 months and 2-3 K$ more and I don't even know what color or how many gears it'll have

I'll report back after I've seen/tried it, but would appreciate any preliminary comments.

Thank you Dave, that's very kind of you. As I said for now its nothing definite, just a wish, but I'll let you know if/when the trip is firmed up. For now, I'm riding whenever I can find a few hours free time and enjoying every minute...
