Yamaha original topbox mounting plate on '08 fjr

Hi All,

I have recently dismantled my topbox mounting plate on my 2008 FJR to clean it properly....My mounting "kit" separates out into two parts...The upper plate which attaches directly to the top box, and a lower plate which "fits" into the upper one which serves as a base (with rubber feet ). between the grabrail on the bike and the upper mounting plate.

Should these two plates be glued/welded/attached together or do they come from the factory as two separate pieces of plastic which interlock and fit together?

I would like to ensure that the mounting plate is as solid as possible, and I would need to confirmt if this mounting plate/kit needs to be repaired/replaced?

Welcome and here Benhur!

In my Gen 1 is one piece mount.I don't know for the Gen 2,but i believe and for the Gen 2 is one piece also.I believe soon, a guy here with a Gen 2 will give you the info that you need..!

If you need to buy a new plate,buy the new reinforced plate with the metal spacers inside the three holes for the bolts:5VS-W0720-21-00

Have a look at the holes..

The Gen I & II share the exact same top piece. The Gen I uses long spacers. The Gen II has the bottom piece instead of the spacers. They are not glued together from the factory. They just snap in place. You can glue them if you want to but, it's not necessary.

many thanks for this update...it has put my mind at rest because my bottom piece interlocks with the top piece, and of course when on the bike, it is not going anywhere because of the bolts passing through both pieces....

I think i will glue them together with epoxy resin though for strength. I figure the bits are more rigid when glued together

More rigid, yes. More durable, IMHO no. A little movement prevents cracking. Rigid things break, flexible ones (relatively) do not.

I absolutely agree with rbentnail on this one. That top box is going to do a lot of wiggling. You want that thing to flex without something cracking on you. :)

Guys for the record....

I had originally taken my mounting plate of to clean under it. When putting the original plate back, I tried to torque the plate up as per specificaton (28nm). the bolts in two of the three holes just went straight through the plastic. it seems the plastic material of the mount can hold up to being torqued a limited number of times before giving way.

I then ordered a new plate with revised part number. Lo and behold it arrives and it is

1. One solid piece...no upper or bottom part. in the revised part number the two bits are glued together...the original part number had two separate plates

2. there are metal bushings/collars in the 3 holes which allow the bolts to be securely torqued up without the material giving way.

the upshot is that the plate is much more solid than before.

I hope that this information can help someone out there. I do know that Mihalis had reported this in another post, and I think he is right, the plate is very much improved.
