and decide for yourself. I found much of the info that was discussed in that forum's thread interesting & thought some here may be interested as well.

Well there is at least one thing that The Chemist is outright lying about. He said:

I just completed the testing on ring free, first off, DO NOT USE IT WITH ETHANOL FUEL. It contains methanol in it and it will destroy aluminum and rubber parts in our snowmobiles, Also ring free is a strong solvent and with methanol and ethanol mixed together it raised the alcohol level to 20% this will cause engine damage. ring free, methanol based, with trimetmyl benzene Cg- H12, and xylene, LAB TESTED.
Assuming that the base fuel is E10 (10% ethanol) to begin with and you add Ring Free at the standard dosing rate of 1 oz per 10 gallons, even if the stuff was 100% methanol you could only be raising the amount of total alcohol by less than 0.01%. (1 oz in 1280)

Even at the "shock" treatment rate of 2 oz Ring Free per gallon of fuel, it could only possibly raise it by 1.5%, (2 oz in 128) and that if it was 100% alcohol. Of course it isn't 100% alcohol, so the total alcohol could never be anywhere close to 20%.

LAB TESTED my ass!

I would have to conclude that "The Chemist" has been sampling his own goods a bit too much. ;)

I guess I'll be the guniea pig on this one. 25,000-30,000 of pretty much constant use so far with no intention of stopping. Currently riding about 30k per year.

At 80k, the FJR is running good.

I've seen raw fuel out the tail pipes just before I lit the after burners (F/A-18 Hornet that is!!!).
I think that the "raw fuel" comment is meant to be "unburned fuel", which is accurate in many situations where you are running very rich. In the case where Ross Kean's bike at NERDS was FUBARed by a grounded O2 sensor wire, it was pretty darned rich smelling. That's the closest I want to be to raw fuel being expelled from the pipes. Phew!!

But I still do not believe that running fuel of too high an octane rating will contribute to such a rich exhaust condition on an otherwise healthy engine. That seems to be the urban legend...

Hey Fred. I should have tried running that at night. Wonder if I would have had flames shooting out the back once everything was heated up well? It sure did stink pretty good!
