To anyone who has the stock Yamaha rack and top box...

How does the rack mount to the bike? Does it just use the existing three bolts on the rear shelf, or does it have some sort of additional support?

The reason I ask, is that the rear rack is only rated for 10 lbs, and it seems like just the Yamaha rack and top box alone would weigh more than that, so I have to assume they added some sort of additional support arms for it like the Givi mount does.

Photos of the Yamaha rack mount would be a great help if someone has them.

THe 03'-05' has 2 additional bolts which is why you need to drill holes on those, don't know about the 06'.

I have the 05, and I had to drill two holes in the back deck to get the two front bolts down to the subframe. The 06 rqack is changed so all three bolts are exposed! Good news, no drilling.

The rack uses those three bolts, and they are attached to the subframe. I think the weight limitation is more on the side of safety for suspension settings rather than the weight that the rack can hold. The rack is also a hand grab for the passenger and I can't see how they think a pillion, under hard braking, is only going to exert 10 pounds of force on that. I think it's plenty strong, and I have had well over 10 lbs in my topcase.

The three bolts go to the subframe. Yamaha was conservative with weight maximums for the '05 too.

Thanks, that tells me what I need to know. I plan on mounting a Givi box to the OHFJR rack, using a Givi universal mount, with no support arms (like the Givi SR357 mount uses) and was wondering if I would overload the rear mounting hardware. From what y'all say, it sounds like it won't be a problem.

I will post photos of my install when I get the OHFJR rack and Givi. My hope is that I can come up with a Givi V46 mount that is not so ugly.

There are a few more things that make me think you won't have a problem. A few people have mounted the Yamaha top box without drilling for the two forward screws to go to the subframe. They simply bent the bolt into an L shape, wrapped it in foam and used the underside of the rack to hold it on. I never heard of any problems resulting from that at all.

Also, I have heard of people mounting the GIVI plate as you describe on the previous model years without problems. I think you'll be just fine!

Fred,

Have you seen this?

I have a Shad case on order & i'm thinking of ordering this mount to attach the universal mounting plate to it.

Thanks for the link. I pretty much have made up my mind that I am going with a Givi V46 with the matching Cobalt blue lid , though that does look like a nice alternative.

The Givi set up will be about $215 for the V46, $60 for the matching blue lid, $50 for the Universal mounting plate, plus whatever the OHFJR rack ends up costing (?).

I have the Givi E52 on my GL1800 and the H&B on my FJR1300 - the Givi cases are much harder / heavier than the H&B. The H&B IMHO has a better locking system and I am really happy with it (I use it to transport my laptop every day to my branch table at MCDs)!

Best Regards,

Shane

May I ask where you found the V46 for $215? I'm thinking of using that same bag.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm hope this is not too late, just received my (complementary) stock Yamaha topbox.

It is mounted on the sam holes (3) with longer screws.

It really has defined small max weight but it does work if loded more.
