With a name like "Rip Harris" what would you have expected.

But the article is just another example of the blatant misuse of statistics to try to make a case for a predisposed conclusion.

They say that the number of older riders having injuries is increasing faster than the number of total riders. And this proves what?

I would bet that it just means that the number of older riders is increasing at that same rate. A few decades ago it was unusual to find people over 50-55 who were interested in riding a motorcycle. Now, well... look around you at the next FJR gathering!

Of course they didn't care to measure that as it wouldn't have supported their hypothesis.

Hope my insurance company does not read about older riders being prone to more injuries, or there goes my "senior discount"!

I would like to see those stats broken down into motorcycle types. How many are on cruisers, not wearing any protective gear?

Pffft! NBC "news" wouldn't know journalism if it bit them in the ***! I gave up on the alphabet networks for any sort of factual info years ago. Besides, us olpharts are too busy out having a good time riding to worry about reading that drivel!

You know, funny as those fools looked (where did he find those red boots?)and amusing as this whole thread is, there are some truths to that article although I feel Fred W is correct about their erroneous assumptions.

Dad is soon to be 68 and he tells me that his reflexes and coordination are not as good as when he was younger. He also notes that older folks are more often on medications that can affect their reflexes and coordination. Take into account the weakening eyesight and there could be trouble.

To offset the effects of old age, we selected the FJR instead of a Harley or cruiser type bike. Dad was not ever that type anyway. We/I figured that with superior handling and braking, RIGHT NOW torque and throttle response coupled with stickier/grippier sport touring tires, the FJR would be safer than a Harley or cruiser. In addition, Dad goes ATGATT. He gave me the task of selecting quality protective gear and I think I spent his money wisely. I know that when he did crash, he survived.

I think that many of these "Older Rebels" get on bikes without having the level of dedication typical of our forum members. They don't know or care about protective armored gear. They don't care about perfecting their skills. They are on cruisers and carry that cruiser laid back mentality right to the hospital or the grave.
