Hi All,

The week before last, when my beloved wife was over in Paris on an unexpected visit treated by our lovely and generous daughter, I found myself baching-it and wondering what to do on my upcoming two days off work.

After thinking about it for 3 seconds, I decided I was going to pack up the ’06 FJR and ride off to destinations, as of then, undetermined. (This would be my first lone-wolf overnight ride in many years, my usual riding buddy, Multistrada-Al, off in Ontario doing the lake cottage thing with wife and rellies.)

By 3:45pm I was packed and on the road. How far I would get - or feel like getting – was still up in the air and dependent upon the vagaries of my mood, the weather as the day wore on, traffic, and my general energy level. As I headed west into the Rocky Mountain the weather continued being excellent, temperature warm, and my mood buoyant. Traffic was long-weekend heavy, but only in the opposite direction.

Here is a synopsis of what I actually did;

Day 1: Calgary, Alberta west on Highway one to Revelstoke B.C. – 440 kilometres.

Day 2: Revelstoke via secondary roads to Kamloops, B.C., then north and east on The Yellowhead Highway (#5) to Jasper, Alberta – 759 kilometres.

Day 3: Jasper to Calgary via Highway 93 (known within Jasper and Banff National Parks as The Icefields Parkway) – approx. 450 kilometres.

Total time away – 52.5 hours.

Percentage of work-weary, crap attitude transformed – 100%

What helped to make this FJR getaway so special was that it was a total bonus – an unexpected road trip that materialized on short notice with almost no planning during a time that would otherwise probably have been taken up with domestic obligations. Also, I was able to be completely selfish as to where and how to ride, where to stop, when to stop, when to eat, etcetera.

The entire ride felt like stolen time.

Following are the photos and captions. Here’s hoping you can all find some time to steal;

Very nice ride. The photos are great. I know those roads well, but have not been there for awhile. Clearly need to get back. Cheers!

Awesome pics. can you post the route? The country there is just fantastic.

VERY Nice. I've ridden most of that in the last couple years. Thanks for taking me back with the outstanding photography of some of the most beautiful places on earth.

Thanks for sharing and I was through much of your route last year. I have a picture of my motorcycle in darned near the same spot at the rest area where the two ladies were admiring your FJR (I didn't so much luck last year). I can also confirm that the breakfast at Super 8 in Revelstoke is not much to be admired.

Thanks for sharing and if possible please show your route!

Very nice, I rode from Nakusp to Valemount then from Valemount to Big Fork Mt after CFO. I would have loved to had the weather and known the little spots to have pulled off on. Thanks for sharing.

Great RR Saxman - when you cut over to Salmon Arm from Enderby you weren't very far from here. Let me know next time!

That's so gorgeous that it's almost sickening! I hope you don't take for granted how beautiful an area you live in. I've been dreaming about riding to Banff for many, many years. Hopefully someday I'll make it up that for North.

Very nice pictures!! And an interesting way to annotate your RR, right on the pictures.

Too bad your wife had to pass up all of that natural beauty for a crummy trip to sinky ol' Paris, :buba:

;)

Hey Fred,

Do you mean stinky? 'Cause apparently that fits. Wifey says because of the rarity of free public

restrooms, people find all kinds of places to urinate in Paris. Stairwells are a favourite. Pinched

her nose closed on quite a number of occasions, evidently...

Absolutely, I'm not taking it for granted Georgia Roller! In fact, I've been looking at life recently

with much the same attitude, and I'm likin' the result. . .

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Here is a map shot of the route I took, for those who would find it informative.

I apologize in advance as I'm not good with google maps and could probably do this better if I knew how.
