Hi All,
The week before last, when my beloved wife was over in Paris on an unexpected visit treated by our lovely and generous daughter, I found myself baching-it and wondering what to do on my upcoming two days off work.
After thinking about it for 3 seconds, I decided I was going to pack up the ’06 FJR and ride off to destinations, as of then, undetermined. (This would be my first lone-wolf overnight ride in many years, my usual riding buddy, Multistrada-Al, off in Ontario doing the lake cottage thing with wife and rellies.)
By 3:45pm I was packed and on the road. How far I would get - or feel like getting – was still up in the air and dependent upon the vagaries of my mood, the weather as the day wore on, traffic, and my general energy level. As I headed west into the Rocky Mountain the weather continued being excellent, temperature warm, and my mood buoyant. Traffic was long-weekend heavy, but only in the opposite direction.
Here is a synopsis of what I actually did;
Day 1: Calgary, Alberta west on Highway one to Revelstoke B.C. – 440 kilometres.
Day 2: Revelstoke via secondary roads to Kamloops, B.C., then north and east on The Yellowhead Highway (#5) to Jasper, Alberta – 759 kilometres.
Day 3: Jasper to Calgary via Highway 93 (known within Jasper and Banff National Parks as The Icefields Parkway) – approx. 450 kilometres.
Total time away – 52.5 hours.
Percentage of work-weary, crap attitude transformed – 100%
What helped to make this FJR getaway so special was that it was a total bonus – an unexpected road trip that materialized on short notice with almost no planning during a time that would otherwise probably have been taken up with domestic obligations. Also, I was able to be completely selfish as to where and how to ride, where to stop, when to stop, when to eat, etcetera.
The entire ride felt like stolen time.
Following are the photos and captions. Here’s hoping you can all find some time to steal;
