Just bought an 07 with a transferable YES warranty until May 2012. The warranty states that I must have a dealer inspect it before it can be transferred. Yammy says they will inspect it for $84.00. I've never bought extended warranties before because I buy quality in the first place and prefer to self insure instead.....this philosophy has saved me mucho money over the years. Now, I might put 15K miles between now and May 2012 and the bike has about 4K on it now which will be a total of 19K miles. The question is how likely would I need warranty repair on this bike with less than 20K on it? $84.00 aint much to pay but its also a pain to take it to the dealer and lining up a ride, etc. I could take that $84.00 and buy a farkle for it.

Well just my opinion but $84 is cheap insurance. Agreed that Yamaha makes a good product but you just never know and an unknown manufacturing defect and/or unknown abuse by the previous owner could potentially turn into a big $$ repair.

I just went to my local dealer (private party sale-not them) and 5 or 6 key strokes and the transfer was done, no charge

Dittos !
Is this standard to just enter it into their database? I guess I need to call another dealer.
I paid $49, but I walked out with a top to bottom report on the bike. It noted all fluids, brake levels, service codes in the PCM, everything.

I'd call another dealer and get a quote or just go in to another dealer and see if they will transfer it.

Tesla,

If you are not sure you are getting assistance call 800-962-7926 Yamaha Customer Service-Cypress/CA.

They may be able to do it for you.

Hmm...I bought a used 06AE about a year and half ago. The bike already had the YES contract, good till 2012. No one ever told me I needed to pay for an inspection to keep the YES in force. In fact, IIRC, I was told that the YES follows the bike, regardless of how many times it changes hands. Like it's part of the bike. I have never read the fine print on it, but I have used it more than once with no problems at all.

My dealer transfered it over the phone. No inspection. I assumed the same thing after reading the fine print.

$84 and a little time is worth the extended warranty. Even if you ride it two months, don't like it, then sell it, having the warranty will increase the resale value.

When I got mine the shop was already familiar with the bike and just did the keystroke thing.

Call Yamaha and have your name and address registered, if only for what may well turn into a recall over the grounding issue - you want to be notified. They aren't allowed to charge for that. Once you've changed that information, your YES will follow.

As to 'self insuring'? You have the YES policy. It covers the bike. Period. If you bring in the machine and there is something claimable, they get authorisation based on the VIN, not the owner's name.

I can't see how that could force you to 'inspect' it because that isn't something required under the policy - I could see where they'd want an inspection if you were to purchase the YES after taking delivery, but once bought, the bike is covered.

Sounds about as real as a dealer's 'doc fee'.

You might want to consider the fact that these are relatively low volume production machines; indeed the engine and transmission aren't shared by other models in the Yamaha line. YES is cheap insurance. I bought it, never needed it, don't regret having spent the money. YMMV.

You can xfer it without charge (the YES is transferable). If you choose to go with an inspection then the mechanix time is worth something.

Say yes to YES. It's one of the best insurance values on the planet, especially if you ride instead of polish.

The requirement to transfer YES is real. YES belongs to the owner, not the bike. I canceled the YES on my 05 when I traded it for the 07, because the dealer placed no value on YES. Used the credit for the unused YES from Yamaha, towards purchase of YES for the new 07.

Dealers have the "option" of charging you for the transfer.

Just re-read the warranty. Says that I must have a Yamaha dealer inspect it withing 15 days of ownership and the dealer has the right to impose a fee for this inspection. The seller had a Yamaha dealer do the 4000 mile service on it this month. Maybe I can get them to sign off on it without too much trouble.

I'm just not certain that this is legal under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act - if they want an inspection for the sole reason of validating a transfer, I suspect that this is fine, as long as they pay for it.

"the warrantor may not impose any duty, other than notification, upon any consumer, as a condition of securing the repair of any consumer product that malfunctions"

The YES warranty I received last month contained the 'inspection on transfer' clause.

If you plan on keeping the bike long at all it would seem a no-brainer for less than $100 to continue the YES. You'd be money ahead if you use it one time.

You should get it for the cheap insurance on a used product, but then hope it was wasted money.

I bought it for an 05 and it did increase the resale value to the purchaser.

Didn't think to see if I could transfer it to my new bike.

Found a dealer that did it without looking at the bike (she was willing to do it over the phone). No fee to do so. Having said that, I was ready to pay the inspection fee. 84 bucks sounds like cheap peace of mind insurance for a years time.

Thanks for all the input.
