I have an odd clunk that has been hard to diagnose. I thought it was the swing arm bearings, but I think its the (jeez what's it called) thing that the dogbones and rear shock mount to. you know the thing that some guys drill and tap for grease zerks. (sorry , shop manual is in the garage)

Anyway, put your bike on it's center stand and take 3/4" ish board and slide it under the rear tire from behind the bike. now use the board as a lever and try to raise the rear tire. You can also just reach down and use your hands but the lever makes it easier.

I get a good 1/4 inch of "free" movement. It seems to all be in the forward mounting location. The shock mount has plenty of side to side movement which I plan on eliminationg with some nylon or bronze washers, but up/down its good and the dogbones are good also.

I'm just wondering if this is normal play before I try to fix something that ain't broke.

So if anyone can chime in with their results I'd appreciate it. I've seen the numerous posts on the subject which made me pay more attention, but if everyone has this same play, then I know I need to have something made instead of merely replaced.

Relay arm. Should be 0 play, as any movement in this piece is magnified in the suspension. It's design tolerance is very close, soit looks like you'll be ordering up some bearings and collars. Not expensive though.

Relay arm! thats it I kept thinking torque arm but knew that wasn't it.

****! Gary open on Saturdays?

Mileage will have less of an effect on that assembly than time. Once water intrudes, the countdown begins. Pressure washers, beware.

Whos got the how to on realy arm removal? I know I've seen it on one of you's guys' sites but I can't find it. I'm just a wee bit stumped on how to get the center stand off now that I have the ass end disassembled and jacked up in the air.

Do I actually need to remove/loosen the header to get that off? Talk about a pain in the ass.

By the way, I rotated the drive shaft with the U-joint cover off and its no wonder everyone complains about slop. The U-joint rotates 30-45 degrees from lock to lock. If I have to order bearing parts I may just get a gasket for the oil fill housing so I can take that cover off and see if its slop that I can see and then get rid of. Its really been anoying me lately. I wonder if any of the V-Max guys have dealt with this?
