I dunno...best idea yet I've heard to farkle a Gen III!

Hey Z

Welcome to the FJRForum. Since you are known as a Farkle Master on the Wing forum, and you set them up for LD rides, you may want to consider doing the brake stay mod to allow you to go Dark Side just in case you're stuck somewhere with a disabled rear tire. One can locate a Les Schwab dealer a lot easier than a motorcycle shop in some towns. By performing this small mod it will give you just another option to keep it rolling if it should come to that.

Sorry Warchild, I know your thoughts about this abomination, but I am curious just who will be the first to go Dark Side with their Gen lll.

Perhaps,

Maybe,

You could go Skooter on us and post up a picture of an exalto on your rear end, and have Eric assign you an number.

Brodie,

No Farkle Master here...I'm just not afraid to try stuff.

Thanks for the information. Why is the brake stay an "abomination"? As far as I'm concerned, there ain't no rules in this game. If you can make something work and its sanitary, why not? This is the kind of stuff I like. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Build them out of Grade 2 titanium? ....and get rid of those stress risers?

I've got to start my own thread. I guess that'd be the first step in this process.

Thanks, again.

Z-doode, I'm really looking forward to see what you come up with for the fjr platform.

I have (great) ideas but no resources ($$/time/machines) to make it happen.

I really look forward to see what you can do.

Well, that was convenient and thanks for the clean up...although I'll always wonder how an internet Jihad plays out.

I have no special skills or formal education. I'm just hard-headed and like this stuff. I'm in it for the fun factor and have been most of my life. At the end of the day, I want a bike that is just a shear joy to ride that I don't want to get off of and if folks criticize it, I could give two $hits. They hadn't got to ride it.

So, let's have some fun...and do a FJR project. At this point, nothing is too extreme if it make sense in some sort of twisted way. All the answers are right here on this forum just a few keystrokes away...and I'm not above doing anything to the bike as long as its something functional. I'm not taking this bike into the after-life with me...I hope it will be a smoldering, worn-out heap when I'm through with it. I've never done this before and it may be the worst idea possible but what the hell. Y'all have got all the info and I'll do the wrenching. I don't want this to be a job for anyone but me and hopefully, y'all can have some fun with it. Maybe the snow-bound folks can use this as an opportunity to ease the pain of the wait. The only way I see to do this is to keep it all public...maybe other newbies can get something out of it as well. If you don't care to be involved, I understand. If you are offended by this approach, please feel free to click the back arrow.

Guess we need to define the objective. I want to end up with a road-eating LD bike. Anything short of a catheter will be considered. This is not going to be a "rally" bike so capacities and such are not an issue...anything goes. Although it needs to be capable, I'm not wanting to push in the direction of a sportbike as the biggest percentage of the time, it won't be canyon carving or a Deal's Gap regular. More interested in distance, maximum rolling and possibly stretching as many miles out of a gallon of gas. I want to be able to see in the dark and plug-in when its cold. I want the ability to haul gear for different riding conditons. Wanting to do everything possibly myself, I do have limitations on my abilities although I may try anyway. Anything we figure out to build will be your ideas as I don't want to sell parts or anything of the sort...when your hobby becomes a job, it kills the hobby. There is a possibility this bike will have a trailer hitch....there, I said it. I keep having a re-occuring dream about a carbon fiber trailer and if so, it will have little, if any, effect on the layout of the bike. And...I'd like to be through with it in the Spring.

"Great ideas" is what we need but before jumping into your's (or others) great ideas, I'd guess we'd be ahead looking at the basics first...crash bars, hiway pegs, triple tree, risers, wheel huggers, hand gaurds, seat mods, (brake stay Brodie mentioned), etc....the store bought stuff. As with the Wings, on some items, there is only one decent option...other items, many many decent options. Like oil threads, everyone's choice/idea is best. Its not my intent to stir controversy but if you could tell me why one product is technically superior over the other, it would help. I'm not going to say money is no object and have no set budget for it but I'm not going to let a few dollars stand in the way of getting whats best suited for the job or end product. Like most, I don't want to half-*** anything on the bike. I have no idea if there are mods the basic bike needs (based on GenII) to move in this direction (tail section re-enforcement, cat removal, tire of choice, better brake pads, etc.).

Now that you've started a bike project, here is where we are at....other than buying the bike and rooting around here a little bit, the only thing I've done so far is order a top tree and risers from Helibars but am open to better options, if any. When you or any others get some time, what would you recommend next?

Seriously, I'm pretty knocked out by what you've done on the 'Wing, and by your freaking garage and stuff. Really can't wait to follow your thread and see what you do with the new bike. Welcome to the forum.

I'd say the basics are a good place to start.

From what I've seen so far is that the Gen. lll bike is essentially based on the Gen ll frame and running gear, only with new tupperware up front and updated electronics with the hardware to support it. Take the time to drop the rear suspension linkage and give a good lube job. Smear some grease on the various pivot bolts to inhibit any corrosion from starting. This would be a good time to modify the brake stay while you have it apart. Do the suspension upgrades for both front and rear, and do the roller bearing headset upgrade.

Check & apply blue LockTite to the mounting screws on the saddle bag locks. They have been known to back themselves out resulting in the loss of the lockset out on the road.

Smear a bit of silicone dielectric grease on the rubber grommets where a frame or body bolt passes through. Do this to the bullet points too on the plastic wrap around piece at the back of the fuel tank. a little goes a long way in making the bike easier to wrench on.

Make the effort to treat every single connector with ACF-50 while they are still factory fresh. A few years from now you will be glad you did.

These few details will help keep your bike from getting old before it's time.

Should you decide to go the SHORAI battery route, be aware that the current offering has a smaller case and will give you about 1 1/4 head height over the OEM battery. You will find that space is at a premium in comparison to the Wing. It will be interesting watching you be creative in your dealing with this smaller bike.

Speaking of the SHORAI, battery, we are finding that its cold blooded when the ambient temperature drops over night. When it gets near freezing it takes 4 or 5 attempts before it fires the bike. It gets stronger with repeated attempts as it warms itself up. I'm planning to wrap mine with Hot Grips and wire it to a timed switch. On cold mornings I'd walk up to the bike, flip the switch and have the battery warm itself up both externally with the Hot Grips as well as internally via energy flow/wake up load. Give it a few minutes recovery time , then thumb the button and (hopefully) be on my way.

That ought to keep you busy for a day or two.

Custom fuel cell, hydration package, dash shelf for radar & multiple GPS. It would be nice to see what designs you come up with.

The first Double Darkside FJR perhaps?

Nice shop, every man should have one like that!

As far as trailer hitches that fit. I believe the Bushtec gen II hitch will fit. I pull a bushtec trailer with mine. Dauntless uised to make hitches that fit the gen 2 also. But I don't think they do anymore.

Depending on your tongue weight you will wnat to upgrade the suspension probably sooner than later. I know that GP Suspension is interested in working with a gen III owner to develop a complete cartdiged kit for both front forks. You may want to call them and see if you are looking into suspension. They have done systems for other brands with similar front fork arrangement.

I would recommend a Power commander V with auto tune module. It will give you power when you want it, but also gives you good MPG. It gives you the ability to have two maps loaded so you can have a power map and a economy map with the flick of a switch. I usually average 42 MPG two up towing the trailer and I am not to gentle on the throttle. I tend to play in the twisties as much as possible. The PCV works very well when towing. The stock brakes are very good and no reason to upgrade there. Even towing and riding agressively in the twisties, they provide plenty of stopping power. As you know when towing the transition from brakes to throttle is where the trailer pushes you and you have to account for that when making your turns.

I have the Remus exhaust cans on, but it is purely for noise candy. They sound great, they may add some power, but I have not done any dyno runs to verify.

The are some frankentank threads on here. I have the second one that dirtracker30 did. Basically he took a stock tank and modified, so it looks stock, Mine holds 9.6 gallons. He shows some very good pictures of how he did it, so if your inclined it is a great way to add capacity and keep the gas up front and easy to access. The tank extends my range to about 300 miles with plenty in reserve to find a gas station.

EDIT: here is the thread by Dirttracker 30 building my tank https://www.fjrforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=135505

here is another more recent thread showing more of his process: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=149373

here is a picture of the tank when I was painting it;

From your GW pictures, I can't wait to see what you do with the electrical for all the farkles. I would like to know what switches, indicator lights and relays you tend to use. They look really clean.

It sure could and you can help. What would you add to this blank canvas?
My tastes in LD farkles is simpler than yours. On the list- fuse panel, GPS, Aux lights, seat, Autocom / 2-way On the fence: HID headlights, better hand / foot protection. Trailer hitch / trailer (for dog) Not interested, but some are: aux fuel. "Highway" pegs? Fairlaner has a set of OEM tip-over guards; it'd be interesting to see if there's a way to add a pair of fold-out highway pegs to them. I was thinking to myself last night it would be interesting to see the full wiring diagram for your Wing. I'm a software guy- your bike has too many buttons for me, but I look at this project every once in a while and get an itch to do something: [URL="https://www.arduinopassion.co...er-a-computer-for-your-scooter/%5B/url%5D%C2"https://www.arduinopassion.com/scoo...scooterputer-display-full.jpg%5D%5B/url%5D%C2https://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a343/Zackybilly1/Barbers6thAnnualTailwind037.jpg]
I'm guessing the Wing being on it's side was intentional this time?
The scooterputer is totally cool. I gotta build on of those. Now I need to work on my skills. Let me know if you ever build one.

Mr. Z welcome to the forum.....all I can say is I've spent a lot of hours in Airbus A320 and Boeing 757 cockpits and they all pale in comparison to your Wing..........lol...........wowee.......I'm betting you need a co-pilot to run that thing..........

Followed your builds of the various Goldwings, Z.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the FJR. You've chosen a great platform to start with!
