Greetings all,

Just got done wiring up the juice for my Zumo550. I decided to use a cigarette lighter type plug rather then hard wire it in because I want to be able to easily remove the unit/mount rather then leave it out in the hot AZ sun where the uv rays can take their toll and the monsoon season can start to rusting the connecters in the summer. I noticed that the cigarette plug on the bike is hot when the ignition is in the off pos because the MP3 player will run (needs 12v to do so). So, I am wondering, if the GPS in in the mount, and the unit is OFF, will I still be drawing off the battery (charging the GPS)? I don't forsee leaving the unit on the bike for extended periods (probably the longest will be fueling up and NOT going into store. I don't think I will run into any problems for such short periods. Also, am I powering anything when the GPS is off the mount?Thoughts?

TIA

Gregory

The auto mount for the zumo charges the unit as long as there is power to the unit. You loose the gas gage function and I am pretty sure the automount is not recomended for riding in the rain. Why not use an SAE 2 prong connector and use the moto mount instead. I did this mainly to switch between bikes and it works fine.

I think that I was misleading in my post, I am using the bike mount and I used a connector that goes into the power socket in the glovebox. That is the one that I am thinking is always hot.

I assume that you are talking about the 2 unused connecters that are by the glovebox when you take the plastic off? I don't have a manual so I was unsure what they are for. I wouldn't mind using them, but I like the ability to quickly remove the entire unit ( I think that I would be able to do so using those mounts though).

The auto mount charges the Zumo when the Zumo is off but plugged in to the cigarette lighter as long as there is power on the lighter plug (some cigarette lighter s are hot all the time, others are only hot when the ignition is on). The motorcycle mount will only charge the Zumo when it is turned ON. If your bike is turned on or off, the Zumo will only charge if the Zumo is turned on. When you kill the bike (to get gas or take a break) the Zumo will tell you via its screen that it "sees" that power is gone and ask if you want it to stay on using the batteries, if you answer yes, it will run from its batteries, until power is restored. So, it will depend on which mount you use. Auto mount, it will charge, MC mount it will not. I leave my Zumo on the bike when it is parked in the garage, and it does not drain my battery at all.

How 'bout just taking the zumo unit/mount out and leaving the wires hardwired to the bike. That's what I do when I move the zumo to one of my other bikes. I velcro strap the wires to the handlebars and the connectors get covered with vacuum caps.

Bustanut,

I only have the one bike, so it is pretty easy there. I went with a 12v male end of the cigarette lighter adapter from Radio Shack. Cost me 10 bucks and the whole thing mounts/unmounts in less then 1 minute.

I just came across a deal on a Zumo 550 and I have a question -

Is there an accessory cable that will allow me to connect the audio out into my Mixit?

Surely someone has done this before - any info would be greatly appreciated.

It uses a standard 3.5mm stereo cable...

You may want to check out Zumo Forums for more information. I'm having a problem inserting the link, sorry.
