While on a trip through North Carolina my Zumo 550 started acting strangely in that it would recycle from the map page to a page that asked if I wanted to save the current location. Then it froze on the opening page: Where to/view map but would not go to either when pressed. I shut it down a couple times then took it out of the dock to see if it might re-boot. Could it be nearing the end of its useful life or does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might get it working like it should. Any ideas (good ones) are appreciated. Thanks

Best idea you can be given.

They replaced my original 550 under warranty when it lost its mind in 2008.

The replacement has worked fine, and this past week they were very helpful in updating my software and firmware for free.

There is also a Zumo forum (https://www.ZumoForums.com) where you can get a lot of help on your 550, but if it were me, I'd just go directly to Garmin Customer Support.

Touch screens are the typical failure. You can send it to Garmin and for about $150 they will send you a refurbished replacement. Or you can buy the touch screen for about $50 and replace it yourself if you can turn a screwdriver and solder.

I replaced my touch screen and did not have to solder. Replacing the screen is easy - you just need a torx screwdriver. Here are instructions.

I bought a touch screen on e-bay as a backup, they come from China and is slow to arrive. I suggest getting one even if your screen is working fine.

Yep your digitizer needs replacing. Get the combo digitizer & LCD assembly from China and it will take you all of 20 minutes..... no solder required.

Great help--thanks to all. Parts order happening this afternoon. Good to know I can easily replace the screen. The photo directions from Jim are most helpful and exact. Much appreciation to all who took the time to respond.
