What is the difference between these two models? I'm not interested in an automatic but is the automatic feature on the AE optional? There appears to be better deals available on the AE's which up to this point, I've just been ignoring. Is the AE simply the A with an option to go automatic? Thanks and pardon my ignorance.

Well covered here.

It makes the manual gearbox into an automatic by changing components. You can shift manually if you want, but not by a traditional clutch handle....because it doesn't have one.

Advantages and disadvantages discussed many, Many, MANY times on this forum before. Try searching on AE site:fjforum.com at Google.

The AE isn't quite 'automatic'. It does away with the manual clutch, and instead a computer operates the clutch to allow the bike to sit at idle, and then engages the clutch when you rev the bike up to pull away from a stop. The clutch is run by the computer for upshifting and downshifting as well, and the AE allows for shifting by either pushbutton on the left handlebar or operating a traditionally located foot shift lever.

The bike does NOT shift by itself, you do still need to either hit the button or the foot lever to shift, you just don't have to worry about pulling the clutch to do it.

The AE is the clutchless shifting model. It's not an option, if you get an AE then you are getting the "automatic" model. The A is the standard shifting version.

The deals are so good because the AE's didn't sell as well as the A's so there are some dealers that bought some leftover stock and are selling them for pretty good discounts right now.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I'm not ready for a clutchless bike just yet. Bummer because there are some deals out there.

If and I mean a very big IF the price differences between an AE and an A are enough, you might want to take a look at THIS thread where an owner converted his AE to an A.

Might be worth your efforts.

Ooh-ooh-ooooh, Mr Kohh-tterrrr!!

I know the answer to this one. The difference is: E!!

You can thank me later. ;)

They are good deals because they suck, and nobody wants one! :assassin: :assassin: :assassin: "Slippin the clutch baby". The only way I would consider it, is if I didn't have a left arm or hand. Then I could still be riding the best scooter out there! :clapping: :clapping:

How about those with no feet or artificial limbs? Maybe the thumb trigger is easier than the foot pedal.

It's a blast for those of us who have nerve damage in our left hand.

Or for a guy that screwed up his ankle ... luckily just a pinched nerve that'll go away, but in the meantime I'm still riding instead of staring at a bike I couldn't get out of first gear without the AE!

I just LUV my AE. Couple more months and it's all paid for so I'll be shopping again. We have a 2009 AE at the dealership still in the crate so maybe I'll just get it, put it away for the day when my 07 CAN'T be fixed if need be and then pull out a brand new one. :D

Think Michael Schumacher and Formula 1! It is a SEMI-automatic since you still shift it. You have no choice but to manually shift it, there is no automatic option. It is based on the technology used in the highest form of motor racing (F1).

I, too, did not want an AE but rode a used one at my dealer to see if I liked other aspects of the FJR since they do not allow you to ride new bikes. I loved the AE and had never shifted so quickly or smoothly in my life. I immediately bought an AE which they had in the crate. I have never looked back.

+100. Love my AE and because of my damaged Left Hand (saw accident in 87) I'm able to ride again after 22 years caged up. :yahoo: :yahoo:
