Thinking about riding over to the gaspe after CFr. Anybody have any suggestions. should you ride it clockwise or counterclockwise? Cross roads not to miss, senic vistas not to miss. Best riute over to get there.

thanks for any help

jack

Did it CCW. Can't tell you very much, the weather was so bad that visibility was almost non-existant. Bring rain gear. For reference, I did it the third week in June.

Did it counter clock wise and took the 198 across at Gaspe, was many years ago now but was a great trip.

I did it CCW, also caught in rain. We stayed overnight at Gaspe, and my riding buddies all wanted to cut across the interior, through some old mining activity (McMurdo maybe?). I wanted to see the coast because I had remembered some photographic workshops I'd been in back in 1972, and when I got to Gaspe, I still had not seen any vistas like those I remembered from the workshop.

They took the interior "short cut." I took the coastal route on around, continuing CCW. The vistas on that NE side were the best of the trip, and they missed them.

We hooked up again at a little bakery/cafe on the north side. The waitress was a doll, everything was in French, they served the best restaurant espresso I think I've ever had (I roast and grind my own beans and make my own Quad every morning, so my standards on this are high). Very friendly people. In fact, I have had some unfriendly experiences in the cities of Quebec, but these rural people were delightful and fun to engage.

If I did the trip again, I'd probably go CW, just to see things from a different angle. We took our time on this trip, coming up out of Maine where we'd started Down East not too far from Acadia. We did get rained on on Day 2, but it could have been worse. I was wearing a bright safety vest, and the guys following said it really helped them with visibility because I was really really visible, and they did not have to concentrate as much on where the road was going. I guess its a good thing I didn't run off ... like lemmings, they might have all followed. Day 3 is the day we split up. The last thing I cared about was Gaspe twisties through the interior. I live in twisties. I wanted to see the coast.

So.... if you get a chance, look up Peter Egan's trip to Gaspe, probably in Fall 2005 or Spring 2006, and reported in Cycle World. He had a lot of thoughts to share.

FWIW, I would go again.

I suggest! From Mt-Tremblant you head up to Québec city. From there stay on north shore trough Charlevoix area (a must). Lots of hills and there’s nothing much to see by the south shore except for the nice mountains across the river on strait Highways full of hurry peoples. At Baie St-Paul city, make sure you leave main road 138 to 362 (old tight road with crazy hills). This will get you to Pointe-au-Pic. Manoir Richeleu is a must over there https://www.fairmont.com/fr/richelieu , lots of bed& breakfast and nice restaurants.

Then up to St-Simeon and take the ferry to Riviere-du-Loup. You might see whales, but don’t know if there in by June .https://www.museevirtuel.ca/Exhibitions/Fjord/english/home_e.html

In Riviere-du-Loup go cw. In Gaspesia, Mt Albert is nice to see https://www.sepaq.com/pq/gas/index.dot?language_id=1 .

In Percé you can have a boat ride to Bonaventure Island on a boat with glass floor (not sure if still in service). https://www.sepaq.com/pq/bon/index.dot?language_id=1

The wife and I went to Old Quebec City for a couple of days, very nice, and then started around the Gaspe in August a couple years ago. It was 45*F and raining and we were totally not prepared for that. We had to turn back after one day, we were frozen. Pretty dissapointing.

Just be prepared for anything. August means nothing up there. I do plan on doing it again at some point.

Agree with ^^^^ 'Maximus' suggestions: Old Quebec City, N. shore crazy hills (one had such a steep grade the bottom couldn't be seen from the top), ferries and whale watching. Some Canadians take sport-touring seriously -- two-up in matching leathers on powerful sportbikes. Bikes go first on the ferries and it's often a little 'race' departing the ferry on the fairly empty road, for a while.

If you have a chance to go west on the Gaspe shore road (south side of the St. Lawrence) the pavement is 'right on the water' and if there's wind and waves, water/waves will splash-up on the roadway making for an 'interesting' riding experience.

I had a similar memorable eating experience on the Gaspe as 'El Toro' described.

Camped at Perce Rock and had brekky at the nearby restaurant named 'Le Pantagruel', also memorable.

CCW keeps you closer to the water.

Good luck, Jack. :)

I'm planning on touring the maritimes before CFR, and was hoping to riding the Gaspe penninsula CCW. I've got nothing to add, but would like to thank those who've made suggestions. The boss is starting to hassle me about "all that time you want off", but it's too late...this trip is all I can think about.

Chris

Sorry - I haven't looked at Max's post with the urls. Travelling CCW will give you the "classic" view of Perce Rock:

Can't comment on June weather there. I did the ride in September

Mary Ellen, great photo! But, couldn't you at least have photo shopped a picture of Old Michael windsurfing out in the bay in front of Perce Rock? I need to start studying my CA maps!

Great idea, Don! But PhotoChopping is NOT one of my myriad of talents ;)

The other talents MORE than make up for that.

I'm sure.

In my own mind, at least .... ;)

Excited for your big camping trip?

I might have (hell, WAS) keen for it but doing the Clam Chowdah Ride this year (still have to book rooms...)

Plus, I still need camping experience. Might get it this summer -but I need a coach ! :p

CCW,

And as someone already mentioned, the most scenic portion (IMHO) is between Rivière-au-Renard & Mount St Pierre.

It's also a nice cruise down #299 (Madapedia Valley)

Something else to keep in mind for a visit along the river route from Q.C towards the Gaspe is:

https://www.epopeedelamoto.com/epopee_en.asp?no=49

It is located in Saint Jean Port Joli

Cheers, shakin
