Rather than contribute to the clutter of the Extreme Alps Tout thread I am going to put the report on this little romp through the Alps here.

The trip started for me with an unadventful trip to the Toronto Airport where I got gouged at the airport bar for a couple of pints before boarding ...

At almost $10 a pint you think I might be trying to buy the brewery on the instalment plan. Once on the plane we were delayed a little bit by lightening strikes in the area and the ground crew was pulled off the tarmac as a safety precaution. In the end we finally were up in the air and on our way. If Air Canada ever offer you free wine during the flight (not fight) don't bother with the red as it is almost undrinkable.

The plane arrived at the Munich Airport and Passport Control went very smoothly since I told the Customs Agent I was here to drink the BMW Koolaid. Surprising Air Canada sent my luggage on the same plane that I was on and we were now on our way to the hotel. As I was walking over to the trains Audi had a display area set up and this contraption caught my eye ...

audibike1.jpg

It's an carbon fibre electric assist mountain bike. Very, very trick.

It was a short stroll over to the trains and all went very smoothly and I soon found myself in the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) of Munich. I found my way over the hotel and after a quick shower it was time for the first order of business ....

Lunch.jpg

This was a very nice Wheat Beer that I had to wash down a rather nice beef doner sandwich that I had for lunch at the street cafe just outside of the hotel. Sitting out on the street patio also allowed for the opportunity to watch the locals ....

lunch2.jpg

I was heading back to the room by who should I come across in the lobby but the architect of this fiasco but our own one and only BeemerDons ...

I was immediately dragged back out onto the street for a walkabout. Time to play spot the Loonie ...

walkabout1.jpg

We walked around for a short bit just to have a quick look at some of the sights ...

walkabout2.jpg

walkabout4.jpg

There were also lots of street performers entertaining the crowds. One example was this 'living statute' ...

It was getting late and we needed to be back to meet up with Pam, Tom & SacMike to head out for dinner. At this point Don had all his maps and was the expert on Munich so I was just tagging along. All I'm going to say is that I should have brought my GPS. just sayin' and nuff said.

Bungie must have looking down on us since we somehow found our way back and met up with the rest of the group and headed out for dinner at a restaurant that Don used to visit during his military days. Tom (who never goes anywhere) has all the food porn shots so I'll leave it to him to describe the dinner which was very good.

On the way back to the hotel We thought we should have a group shot at one of the fountains just to show WheatonFJR that we were upholding the finest traditions of the FJR Forum ...

I had now been up for about 24 hours expect for a little bit of sleep on the plane so when we made it back to the hotel I crashed out. It's now about 3AM in Munich since I woke early (still need to reset the body clock) and I figured I get this report started and then go back to bed.

This is a promising start. Thanks for posting. Any trip report that opens with a beer is most worthy! :clapping:

Europe is mucho mas fancy for the FJR tradition. Wheaton retreated to the side of a modest waterfall in CA.

The Arizonaa Beemers rolled in last night, so our bunch is close to complete. Tonight we all gather at 7 to visit the famous Hofbrauhaus. I'm hoping I can get a beer there. All this walking has got me a little thirsty. We leave Munich on Wednesday to pick up the bikes and begin the tour Thursday. Hoping for the best from my rain gear, cuz It's rained--HARD--twice in this last week.

Munich is a fantastic city. Lots and lots to do, great train/tram/subway system to get around with. My contribution to this RR will have to wait till I can upload my piccies. I also hope I'll be using a computer with a more standard keyboard, cuz this one in the hotel is set up for German. The y and z are in each other's places, and it's got characters on it like ß, ö, ä and µ. I like things much simpler than this. And yes, I do like Old Michael. In a very manly way, of course.

SacMike lent me a few of his photos so lets have a peek at what Mike has been doing ....

foodporn1.jpg

Looks like Mike got himself a big pretzel and sausages for lunch and after too many beers started hitting on the statutes in the plaza ...

livingstatute1.jpg

livingstatute2.jpg

Mike also lent me the photos from dinner at the Hotel Palais Keller Restaurant night as we toasted Munich ...

foodporn2.jpg

As I mentioned earlier the dinner was quite good. Pam & Mike had the sausages ...

foodporn3.jpg

Don & I had the boiled beef with potatoes & spinach ...

foodporn5.jpg

and Tom had something else ...

foodporn4.jpg

This morning we met up with the Beemer crowd and split into a few different groups. Some of the group took off for a trip outside of Munich and Mike needed to get some shopping done so that left Pam, Tom & Don along with Bruce of the BMW gang along with yours truly to do more sightseeing around Munich.

After breakfast we hopped on one of the tour buses and headed over towards the Nymphenburg Palace. Here is one half ....

palace1.jpg

and here is part of the second half ...

palace2.jpg

We then headed over to Olympic Park which is just across the road from the home of BMW ...

BMW1.jpg

We are going to be heading over to the BMW Museum tomorrow and will probably head over to the Olympic Park afterwards. I did manage to get a decent photo of the Olympic Tower from the bus ...

OlympicTower.jpg

The Red Bull Extreme Challange is going to be in Munich on Aug 11th but we will be doing our own extreme riding up in the Alps by then ...

RedBullAd.jpg

One of the workers near the stadium had a Extreme SuperMotard for getting around town ...

Supermotard.jpg

The tour bus was also pretty extreme as it wound its way through some of the narrow streets ...

towers1.jpg

To be continued ...

'Bout damn time this RR got rolling.

Good start, Bill, but we need more "culture," as OM defines it.

Looks like you guys had some fun.

The price of beer reminded me of a trip to the Czech Republic in 1988. While lifting a few with my Czech brethren in a pub, I was told that "if" a president ever comes to power and raises the price of beer, the Czech army would quit.

It looks like you are having lots of fun already. Munich is a great city. Apart from the BMW museum, I visited it last year and was a bit disappointed so I shot along the A8 to Stuttgart and paid homage to Mercedes and Porsche before heading down the B500 through the Black Forest. You'll have to give that road a try the next time you are over.

Looking forward to meeting up with you all in Levico Terme on Saturday.

Dave

Here are a few more photos of our local activities. A couple are of walking through a wooded area to get to a popular beer garden( English Garden). There are numerous outdoor markets where fresh fruits and vegetables can be purchased.

Is there any other way?
+1, Gunny; an excellent observation Mark, very well spoken!

The Munich English Garden

After the first bus tour we hopped on another tour bus to head over towards the English Gardens. Along the route we passed by many cultural sights within the city ...

We finally arrived at the entrance to the English Gardens ....

From here we walked over to the Chinese Tower within the Gardens to enjoy an outdoor lunch ...

On the way back to the park entrance we had to stop and wait for this other form of transportation ....

horsecarriage.jpg

When we arrived back at the bus stop we were able to check out this nice little 125cc Gilera that was parked up on the sidewalk ....

We were out to dinner with the most of the entire group for the ride tonight. The only folks still missing are Chris & Diane along with Don's buddy Uri.

Per usual in Germany dinner started out with the usual ...

dinner2.jpg

I had the Tegernsee which was the regular Pilsner but most of the folks went for the wheat beer ....

dinner4.jpg

Here is the group as it now stands ....

dinner5.jpg

From left to right - Tom (Huron52 who never goes anywhere), Pam, Dave from the BMW Group, Don (BeemerDons), Denny from the BMW Group, Mike (SacMike), Bruce, Bob & Gary all from the BMW Group.

Dinner was once again quite excellent. I had the sausages with curry that was so good it was gone before I had a chance to get a photo. I did manage to get a photo of Tom's salad with beef ...

dinner3.jpg

By all reports it was also very good. Sorry for the quality of the photos since I only had my iPhone with me. The big party will be tonight and I brought the good flash unit for my Nikon so there should be lots of opportunities for incriminating shots.

Later this morning we are heading back up to the BMW Museum so I should be able to steer this Ride Report back towards motorcycles and then tomorrow this whole fiasco heads over to the town of Erding where we meet up with our guide and pick up the bikes for the ride. We're having fun sightseeing around Munich but I'm starting to itch to get riding.

Chris & Diane will also be arriving back in Munich today and Uri will be meeting us in Erding tomorrow to complete the group.

more later ....

I want to shout out a big Thank You to Miss Tyler for the gift of my new "jes sayin' and nuff' said" shirt she gave to me!

Danke Schoen, meine Liebchen Tyler!

Pam has the good sense not to post on the FJR Forum.
