Possibility Stereo for my Bike

I have been wondering if anyone has come a cross a stereo system that will work on the FJR. I spend most of my time riding by myself so a little music would make the ride that more enjoyable.

Earphones and an iPod are a very good option. There isn't a premade radio and speaker set that will just bolt on that I'm aware of.

getting something installed will cost a lot more than an ipod and some marshmellow earbuds. Just be sure the ear buds plug in your ear, so you block out road noise, or you will damage your hearing.

In many states, and I know in Florida, earbuds are illegal. Helmet speakers are OK, earplugs are OK, but in-ear speakers are not.

Not that you'll be stopped on that suspicion, but if discovered during something else will only add to your problems.

That said, a portable digital music player (iPod-type) or satellite radio works best.

Haven't seen one in my time here. Not aware of anyone that would be compact enough to fit in the existing cowling without major rework or ugly-fying. Most go for earbuds and a small player.

It varies state to state significantly and although off topic of the posters question...conveniently covered here.

My music is on the zumo and I use etymotic er6i in-ear buds (the law be damned!).

Been pulled over in West Virginia and Nebraska with them in. Didn't get a ticket for anything either time, even the speeding. Maybe they're good luck charms.

zzkenoman used to have some pics up on epicurean riders of a stereo system mounted in the fairing. You might try contacting him.

I've been using a Pioneer Inno2 in a rain-proof sleeve pouch and am tired of hassling with the power and loose connections with the mount. Am mounting one of these today and while the output isn't huge at 15W/channel, the thing was designed for tractor, ATV, motorcycle, & other outdoor uses. Note that it also gets the weather bands. It has an MP3 input jack which could be used for radar detectors. If not using the speakers, it has a common stereo 1/4" headphone jack and Radio Shack has 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter plugs for under $10.

Thats a lot of $ for a radio but I guess it fits the bill.

Finally got around to finishing the installation of the Jensen JHD-910 and while the hardened case gives it a bit of a dual-sport look, it works great. Reception is better than the car gets and it takes audio from whatever is velcroed to the front brake reservoir (Ipod/ XM Inno2/radar detector).



The mount is the aluminum bracket that I previously made for my Gerbing controller and GPS. The forward 2 tank bolts hold it and nobody is going to just pull it off. The downward oriented plug is the audio output that is routed to ear buds, but it could go to a mixer or intercom.



The antenna is temporary until I find a suitable hiding spot for a shorter one.



As for price at $199, it cost less than the Ipod I just got one of my kids. I almost always ride solo so don't need an intercom. I'm on the bike about 2 hours a day commuting and having a real radio is great, rather than fumbling with cheapos, replacing batteries or nightly recharges, and not being able to see the display. YMMV, but the price worked for me.

Since I ride 2-up quite a bit, I installed a StarCom Advance comm unit.

Plugged into the StarCom I have the Zumo (so that Cyber Sally can tell me that I just missed a turn) and a Sirius Stiletto II.

I bought a car kit for the Stiletto. I have the cradle sitting in the cell phone pouch thingy in the tank bag. The power comes from a Powerlet cigarette-stype adapter getting its power from the battery tender pig tail. I ran the antenna to the front-brake reservoir and used a porn-patch of velcro to secure it.

Works great. Come to EOM '09 and you can check it out in person.

Only on my Goldwing do I have a automobile sterio head with 4 speakers also wired into my headset with volume control separately to each.

On my FJR, I use a MP3 which now is plugged into a J&M CB with their headset.

On my cruiser, I use (non CB bikes) an MP3 plugged into a set of wafer thin headsets through a booster amp and that works great.

Sierra Electronics and Whitehorse Gear sell both the headset ($35) and the 10 fold boost, rechargeable amp $65, or a lesser battery operated amp can be had from Radio Shack.

I have one of the jensen radios new in package and a stealth antenna that could be easily hidden in the bodywork. i would let it go for 150 plus shipping. pm me if interested.

I was going to do the same thingwith it on the fjr but got a zumo and bluetooth headset. the weatherband on the jensen radio would be pretty nice to have though.......

You may want to check out the new Garmin GPSMAP 640. Weather proof GPS with XM radio built in. Headphone jack so you can plug the earbuds directly in. Should help eliminate the number of additional devices in the cockpit...

It's beautiful, but in my case has the same cost ($900-$1000) problem as the Zumo 550. I just wanted a good <$200 weatherproof radio for daily commuting and occasional trip. When I need a GPS, I have a cheaper Garmin that goes about the radio.

Squeezer here is the post i did back in August '08 when I installed my autocom & Jensen Radio:

I have wanted an Autocom for about 10 years now & I want you to know it was worth the wait & the price. It was a straight forward installation & actually set up easier than I thought it would. Even when I paired the optional bluetooth component with my Motorola Krzr, I only had to do it once!

Here is a pic of where I installed it:



Yes its mounted atop of my alarm & you can see the bluetooth doggle just below the brace for the rear carrier.

At the same time I also installed a Jensen weatherproof AM/FM & NOA Weather band Radio on a steering head stem mount:



I decided to go with the Jensen JHD01- Radio because its compact, has a built in 15 watt amp, an aux in to connect an MP3 through it. I live in NYC & there is an abundance of great radio stations that I can listen to while commuting. On long distance rides the MP3 takes over, boosted by the 15 watt amp directly into my Autocom.

On one of my first rides with my new farkles I went to a store to get a few things on my Honey Do list & although the skies were grey the forecasted afternoon thunderstorms hadn't arrived yet. I no sooner come out of the store & power up the bike & the NOA Weather alert breaks in over the FM station I had tuned to give me a heads up on an incoming Thunder Cell. Ten minutes later I pull in the garage just as the rain drops started. So much for a ride after going to the store.

You may notice I installed the radio antenna in Panel C of the fairing.

So far I am extremely pleased with the way the Autocom functions. Last weekend while on a ride along the Delaware River with my buddies, I received a call from my wife & it was crystal clear. The Autocom beeps & mutes all music with the incoming call. Sweet!

I love the way it works.
