I bought extended frame sliders from Ebay with the hopes of using them as highway pegs also, but they are still too short and my legs hit the fairing making it uncomfortable to use the sliders as pegs.

So the cheap side of me made some frame slider extenders using schedule 80 sprinkler pipe, aluminumized tape, and old cut up grips.

It is comfortable to use, but I am concerned the tape will expand/contract with temperature making it impossible to remove them. They are high enough to clear in a tight turn and are installed snug, but I wonder if there are any pit falls to trying this? Maybe drill a hole through the sliders and extenders with a pin to be safe?

Any thoughts?

Nothing personal, but . . . . .

No helmet, sandles, shorts, t-shirt, carrying a drink in one of the hands that's not on the bars, and playng with something with the other? And you're advising someone on whether something is safe to do????

Really???!!!!?!??!

I'm sure he doesn't ride like that all the time :)

Back on topic, I meant to say before to the OP that you shouldn't expect your sliders to work as designed if you do that to them. If the bike lays over, that peg may break out and leave the slider to do its job, or it may put enough leverage on the slider to bend the bolt and fold it over, perhaps even with frame damage.

... or it may put enough leverage on the slider to bend the bolt and fold it over, perhaps even with frame damage.
Which, coincidentally, is true of any slider that is mounted directly to the frame/engine bolts the way the majority of 2nd gen sliders are. These are all clearly an aftermarket accessory not sanctioned, approved, validated nor verified by the manufacturer to be safe for the frame.

What does a slider do for you in an actual get-off anyway? Saves some of the painted tupperware parts from being scratched? Maybe. But that is at the risk of mangling the frame and totaling the bike that might only be badly scratched up without them.

Yeah, I have sliders on my 1st gen. They are the Motovation brand ones of the "no-cut" variety. What makes those attractive to me is that the slider mounts to an intermediate plate and not the engine or frame itself. I do not expect these to save my bike from destruction in the event of a low side (nothing can save it from a high side). I only expect it to help with the zero mph drops of which there have been 2 over the years.

So, will these extensions cause the slider to not work as the aftermarket designer intended? Maybe. I guess you can buy the ticket and take your chances.

What I can't vouch for is the aesthetics of such a slider extension. And people complain about FZ1 mirrors? Sheesh... :p

Besides, how exactly does one maintain the MYRP with their legs pushed out there in the chopper mode? My back would be killing me in no time...

And stop bustin on Barry. He's got the automagic AE version FJR. No hands needed!!

I think its funny that alot of you crack on me for this picture, which BTW I dont mind at all. The thing is, this is my poison, I dont drink or smoke. This is the only way I can add chance to my life. Plus if your riding an FJR like a ***** you are on the wrong bike. This bike it SERIOUSLY fun. This was one time, my wife took the picture from her cell phone, in the car beside me, traveling 60MPH down the road because I texted her while riding down the road with no hands on the bars!! TAKE THAT! Most of the time I at least have on a helmet!! HA Love the AE, it has auto pilot!!!

Sorry this is TOTALLY off topic.

Wait, sliders are dual purpose and yes its hurts your back to sit like this very long but having somewhere to move your feet for a short time is VERY nice!!! ON TOPIC

Thanks Fred! + for you my friend!

The purpose of the highway pegs are for those occasions when I ride a long distance, like to Yosemite or the Sequoias. Not far for most people, but far for the sportbike rider in me. Once there, the pegs come off and let the twisties begin. No one can see the pegs but me cause they come off once I reach my destination. My original question was with their security, but I tested them today on the way to Malibu and they work just fine. Very comfy for me for short spells. Thanks for the comments, those on topic that is.

You've been reading my mind...I've been thinking of trying something similar to this for weeks! It's been in the 90's here for 2 long and putting my feet up on the sliders helps cool things off! Where'd you get the pipe? I was thinking of drilling a hole through the sliders and pipe then using a pin and cotter pin to make sure they don't slide off. I think in the event of a tipover or lowside, the pipe would break off and the sliders would do their job.

I got the pipe from my garage. Just old sprinkler pipe (white PVC). I used the aluminized tape as a ship, wrapping it around the pipe until it was snug. It is hard to remove, but not impossible. I wanted it tight to keep it from falling off. Drilling a hole and pinning would not be a bad idea though.

I did a similar mod to try out how such highway pegs would work:

highway_pegs.jpg

My test setup was made of very thin wall tubing which I covered in very thick heat shrink tubing for the portion that wasn't inserted in the slider. In a crash at any speed the tubing would just fold back. I actually tested the setup in a slow speed crash at a hotel in Hot Spring MT that had decided it would be a good idea to fill potholes in their parking lot with PEA! gravel. When the front tire of my FJR hit the edge of said pothole (that was filled with essentially marbles), it rolled sideways toward the center of the pothole and uncerimoniously dumped the wife and myself onto the ground. Without my extended sliders installed I would have had damage to the fairing, but the extra length allowed the tubing to hit solid ground before plastic hit gravel. :yahoo: And ATGATT ensured no rash on us.

As far as the effectiveness of highway pegs in that position, they have their plusses and minuses. For me the key to long distance comfort is to adjust body position regularly and those pegs allow for a couple new options. I can rest my calves on the pegs to stretch the legs and allow LOTS of air to shoot up the pants for cooling. I also can put the boots on them and then rest my elbows on my knees while lightly holding the bars. Neither position is comfortable for long periods, but that's not the point for me because I'm just looking for variety in positions.

Having confirmed their effectiveness for rider comfort, I had leo make me a set of pegs to fit my sliders. Check THIS LINK for pics of the slider mounted pegs. At least I hope the pictures are still there - I can't check here at work because the Net Nazi's block most picture sharing sites. The pegs are actually Harley pegs (don't tell anyone I have Harley parts on my bike) mounted to a adapter that slides into the slider and is secured with a set screw. Regretably he's no longer in the business last I heard.

How come you guys just don't get the Wild Bill type highway pegs? You legs get to stay lower which is a hell of a lot more comfortable in my not so humble opinion.

Barry- Love the photo! Just like a lot of the idiots around her in Phoenix.

I cut slider-extenders from 2" OD black nylon (the same stuff the sliders are made from). I reduced the OD at one end so they slides into the slider and are held in place with rare earth magnets. I can put them in and take them out in just a couple seconds.

I'll try to get a picture up shortly.
