TC PM'd me to note that the routes I layed out some time back can't be found via search (undoubtedly, hack related). He wanted me to lay out the southern route again, so here's what I think I suggested:
Starting from the Reno Hilton early (suggest before 9 am), head south on 395 to Mount Rose Highway (431)**, making a right there (southwest) over Mount Rose to Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Go left (east) on 28 through Incline Village and south along the east shore until it tees into Highway 50 (where you go right) to proceed further south along the east shore until you reach the city of South Lake Tahoe. Stay on 50 west through town to the "Wye" at Emerald Bay road, where you make a left (at this point, this is both 50 and 89) south to Myers, and just past the typically unmanned Ag inspection station, to make a left (south) on 89 over Luther Pass (instead of proceeding straight on 50 over Echo Summit). At Picketts Junction, 89 tees into 88, and you go left (east) to Woodfords (it's both 88 and 89 here). At Woodfords, make a right (south) through Markleeville (on 89). About 5 miles past Markleeville, go left (east) on 89 over Monitor Pass (instead of proceeding straight on 4 over Ebbetts Pass) to 395, where you make a right (south). Gas is available in Walker before you get to the turnoff to 108, where you make a right (west) over Sonora Pass. In Sonora, go right (north) on 49 to Angels Camp. At Angels Camp, go right (northeast) on 4 over Ebbetts Pass, which takes you back over the summit to Markleeville and Woodfords. At Woodfords, make a right on 88 to Minden, where it funnels into 395 north (left) at a signal. Go north through Carson City and the Washoe Valley to Reno. (Approaching Reno from the south on 395, make sure you make a right onto the 395 freeway on-ramp north**, instead of proceeding straight (which turns into Virginia Street). Get off on Mill Street and the Hilton is right there.)
** In the morning, a few miles south of the Hilton, you go right on a circular offramp to continue onto 395 south, and a couple miles south of there is the turnoff to Mount Rose Highway (same intersection where you'd go left (east) over Geiger Grade to Virginia City).
