City Of Rocks NP in Idaho

as of some yrs ago, this was correct. It's well off the beaten path so probably unchanged, imo. From yrs ago, my 1st hand info is outdated (so what), I'd remember an FJR could do it. No major hills or declines that I recall. I would have come in from Burley, ID direction.

Looked at a "new" 2010 today - did not pull the trigger...Yet!

local dealership = support. in 3 months any few $ you'd have saved by extensive shopping means naught: travel distance avoided and times wasted. go for it. Road trip calling ...

    Stupid Oil Change question

I change oil / filter on side stand and check level stood up level on both tires. Since spec calls for center stand, this means I've been overfilling it for a good 60,000 miles. So, does it matter? No.

    Looking to buy an FJR

I have a Gen 1, 60,000+ miles worth of riding it. If I lived in Phoenix I'd buy a Gen 2. I imagine, with little research and trial and error and insulation stuffed in, you could make a big improvement in the heat management on the Gen 1's, but why bother. Also some say gen 2 stock...

First Good Ride and First Bad Occurance

Good show. Congrats. Had mine since fall '03. Can't relate to having had a prior bike that you'd only ride 100 miles; but that's history. Center stand. I use center stand for service and maintenance. If it's summer and sunny I position the bikes shadow so it shields the side stand - means...

    Tires

Pleased with Avon Storm 2's for the last 700 miles. Used earlier version Avons for 45,000. All my riding is on blacktop, frequently chip seal resurfaced. I understand there are concrete roads somewhere ... else. Thru end of June there's a $25/tire rebate - go to Avon Tire website.

Wrong Way to do Oil and Filter change

... so must have enrolled in Stupidity 101, absentmindedly. Did I really do this? Change the oil and filter. How can I goof that up with years of practice? So after coming back from a ride around town, put oil pan underneath the FJR, drained out the old oil, old filter off, new filter on, got...

    Replacing Brake PAds

I used just half the number of pads when I replaced my '04 gen 1 brakes last year (or was it prior yr?). Returned the unopened set of pads to dealer parts counter (with raised eyebrows noted). One new pad and one old pad per side. Yamaha original and Yamaha replacement. 45,000 miles...

Planning trip from Vancouver Island to Utah

you don't say when. well here are my two thoughts: A) going down: take your GPS route to Pendleton, OR, then south on Rte #395 to Burns, OR. 'Tis good pavement, very good road. From Burns go south to Winnemucca, Nevada either thru 1) French Glen and Fields, OR (I always stop at French Glen...

    Coolant Shelf Life

antifreeze doesn't go bad in bottle, even if opened. Suggest use distilled water ($1/gal) to dilute or you'll probably get scale forming in cooling system.

    Front fork oil?

I used 5W Honda fork oil and wish I'd used 10W. Stock suspension.

    long distance riding

pathfinder ^^^ has good perspective, me thinks. $.02 thought here is ... get on the road early (and start w/ new tires) so that equals 390 miles/day enjoy
