FJR frame not an electrical conductor

For the analog sensors which use a regulated 5 volt DC supply they need a separate return back to the computer module. You could easily have a separate return system for those devices. These are very low current analog devices. But for most devices where precise voltage levels aren't very...

    Tire pressure gauges

My gauges are a claw hammer and a Milton Pencil 50 psig tire gauge. I always whack the tires with the hammer before I roll back out of the garage. This is my quick yes/no indication. I use the pencil gauge every fortnight or so and usually add a bit of air as necessary.

    '13 A&S Clutch retrofit?

My comments about the spacer are based on drawings I saw in the Service Manual. I have noticed some errors on miscellaneous drawings. In the Specifications section there is a subsection labeled Lubrication System Chart & Diagrams. On one of the pages a cross-section of the main transmission...

    '13 A&S Clutch retrofit?

"I opted not to replace the "Spacer 1" (p/n B88-16181-00-00) because pulling that out meant removing and reinstalling the clutch basket, which otherwise didn't need to be removed. Comparing what I could see of the old one to the new one, I can't see any difference. There are no new holes to...

    Ambient air temp sensor location?

Didn't know about "Lo". Interesting. Does it begin displaying numbers at 40 degC (104 degF)?

    Ambient air temp sensor location?

For those FJRs which have a numeric temp readout for the coolant one might compare this reading with the air temp reading after the bike has been idle overnight and reached ambient temp. Using one high quality air temp sensor makes sense. The computer might tweak the temp up a bit for engine...

Regular vs Heavy rated tires question

I'd guess the main difference is how they behave when you're heavily loaded and leaning aggressively. With the extra sidewall plies the stronger tire likely flexes less side-to-side when you're leaned over.

    Cam Chain Tensioner

If you installed a manual tensioner on your FJR are you obliged to discuss the tensioner with prospective buyers of your FJR? I still have the OE tensioner on my '04 with 85k miles. Maybe I should install the newest design but mine's not particularly noisy.

FJR frame not an electrical conductor

I'm curious why the FJR designers didn't use the frame as a return path for many of the electrical circuits. They have a few circuits using the engine crankcase as a return -- starter motor, oil level switch, and gear indication. On my Honda car the battery negative terminal connects directly...

    '13 A&S Clutch retrofit?

"The part number for item #21 - "Spacer 1" has a new part number. I don't know how important the difference in that part is, but I did order the new one and will be installing it. I'll compare the parts and report back here if it seems important or not." They may have added some additional...

    '13 A&S Clutch retrofit?

I would have expected that middle gear damper spring gizmo to come into play a bit when using 5th gear and the rear brake during the loosening and tightening of the axle nut. That gizmo must have a very strong spring. One wonders how much torque is required to get any movement from that mechanism.

drilling small holes in the clutch basket?

Looking at these photos it appears that plenty of oil gets into the clutch boss and lubes the pressure plate bearing. https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20100320/DSCF5879.jpg https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20100320/DSCF5878.jpg You can see two large holes in the back of the clutch boss at approximately...

    Gasoline smell

If they synced the throttle bodies they could have left off one of the rubber caps. Maybe when they raised the tank they disconnected a hose and forgot to reconnect it. As was mentioned a California model should not emit unprocessed fuel vapors.

drilling small holes in the clutch basket?

Looking at these photos the OE clutch boss doesn't appear to have the three sets of holes on the outer edge. https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20100320/DSCF5881_en.jpg https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20100320/DSCF5882_en.jpg It also appears that the outer grooves are narrower on the OE boss although...

drilling small holes in the clutch basket?

In your Service Manual sketch you can see a a large flat washer on the axle just to the left of the clutch boss and to the right of the clutch housing bearing. That washer has some shallow grooves cut in it which radiate out from the center hole. Oil can escape from the clutch housing bearing...

    Hard down shifting...clutch circuit issue?

The stroke of the clutch pressure plate on my '04 FJR is approximately 2.0 mm. According to the specs I've seen the minimum stroke for an '06 AE is 2.8 mm. There are nine friction plates in the clutch. 9 x 2 = 18 friction plate interfaces. If the pressure plate moves 2 mm and that movement...

    first oil change

When I got my FJR at D & H Cycle they sold me Kawasaki oil for the first change. Don't know if they sell Yamalube. The typical multi-brand dealer probably only sells one brand of engine oil. My local Yamaha dealer only sells Honda oil.

    Gen 1 (2004) Handlebar Vibrations

An Audiovox Cruise Control or comparable unit can alleviate much of the potential numbness if you'll use them. I installed one on my '04 less than six months after I bought it in '03. I soon was addicted to the device and use it whenever conditions allow. Hand fatigue and numbness aren't...

    Hard down shifting...clutch circuit issue?

"... I already know that if I squeeze the clutch lever twice or in most cases just hold the lever down for about "one-1000" count it tends to shift fine." Squeezing the lever two times (pumping it up) would suggest air in the clutch hydraulics or possibly a leaky master cylinder seal.

    Cam timing experts needed

Look at page 7 of this FJR document for a drawing showing the chain and guides. Only the front guide (exhaust side) might affect timing. https://www.fjrforum.com/files/fjr1300guide.pdf Looking at this drawing I don't understand how fiddling with the automatic chain tensioner could let the...
