Four valves at low end of clearance spec. Button her up or adjust?

"There's a method to the madness..." For many years, now, there've been lots of motorcycles (in-line-4 sportbikes, for example) where removing the engine (or, almost removing the engine) can greatly facilitate valve clearance checks -- and, especially valve clearance changes (where...

    Acceptable oil usage?

In the combustion chamber or in the exhaust pipes isn't where it needs to be. If most FJRs use no (noticeable) oil -- then, those that do are different (for some reason)...?

    Acceptable oil usage?

I once had a friend who bought a new Kawasaki and after a while was asking the dealer for warranty work because the engine appeared to be using oil (lowering sump levels). Well..., Kawasaki had a procedure for determining if a motorcycle is using oil. (iirc) It required parking the bike in the...

    Is my bike lowered?

As an added data point: The stock 'dog-bones' on my '03 (and maybe all Gen 1s...?) measures 6 1/4" on centers (16 cm, if you live in a metric world).

    First Thursday in Minneapolis

'40s/'50s BSA M20/M21 -- 500cc/600cc flat-head single (M20 = 13HP, top speed = 55 MPH) Gear box usually filled with grease (as opposed to gear-lube) -- much neater... I once went to look at one I heard of tucked-away in the corner of a guy's garage -- when I asked if he'd be interested in...

    Bikers, smokers -- both stink

"First Hand Smoke" is more reliable... :o :( Saving yourself so you can kill yourself...? :o

    Need Advice

(clutch) Physics 101 -- think: "(The Law of) Conservation of Matter and Energy." At 'X' RPM the FJR's crankshaft has 'X' HP available for use -- the clutch delivers that HP (via the trans.) to the rear wheel. If there's a great differential between the crankshaft speed (HP) and trans./rear...

What needs to be on the bike for LD travel

Good one...! If it doesn't move and it should -- use the WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't -- use the duct tape. :)

Nylon windshield screws and a new Rifle shield

Making sense is what the FJR Forum is all about -- especially on Fridays... :o Hand tools -- how quaint... This is the 21st century, ya know...

    Faced with a fix-or-buy decision:

Do they really want $5K to install a few parts in your FJR's engine? That sounds like highway-robbery, to me. :o (how do they justify that... )

Is that the repair estimate from the shop? Care to share the diagnosis and repair estimate -- parts & labor?

    300 miles on a tank

    Yep, several times. There's an Interstate I take on occasion where I fill-up at a truck-stop at mile-marker 450 and I get off at a town at mile-marker 150 -- takes 4 hours... :)

    Triumph Tiger...

From England's MCN: "The Tiger 800 has become the fastest-selling new Triumph in over a decade. The Hinckley firm shifted 700 Tiger 800s and XCs in just the first four months of 2011." BMW must be feeling the heat. "It's a timely riposte to BMW, whose boss Hendrik von Kuenheim lays into...

    2011 WSBK Daddy/Daughter Adventure!

Thanks for the ride. Good on'ya for passing it on... My son and I travelled alot in his formative years both 2-up and on our own bikes. (he told me this story:) A while back he took his daughter as a passenger on a m/c ride in the mountains on his sport-tourer and, as they were standing at an...

A life vicarious (offered & accepted)? I think, for many/some, just 'making it go' -- is motorcycling...? :(

    UPDATE: JB's Bike Problem Diagnosed

At least get the full diagnosis and estimate of cost of repair (without that, you just don't know). Used/junk yard engines are kind of 'a pig in a poke', IMO (unknowns -- ya take yer chances). I recco fixing what you got. While it may seem daunting to some, good motorcycle shops disassemble...

Gen 1 Front brake claiper sticking?

+ 1 ^^^ what 'wfooshee' said -- the main caliper seal "shape" functions to pull the caliper piston back into the caliper some (along with what little random motion the rotor might contribute). What, sometimes, becomes an issue here is: corrosion caused by electrolysis (dis-similar metals --...
